Give me one or two specific reasons you didn't like the Rose character. I recently spoke to someone who said he didn't like her and when I asked why specifically he couldn't give me a real answer. I suppose those of you who didn't like her will be able to give me a better response here since you'll have had time to think about it. But be honest, was she really so bad? And if so, why?

I did not dislike her specifically, but I thought she was a bland and badly written token character. Some points: - Her motivations and arc are silly. So, she grieves because of her sister's sacrifice and thus sabotages Finn heroic (arc-fulfilling) attempt at saving the Resistance: Resulting in nearly killing them both by the crash, being sitting ducks on the frontline and dooming the remaining rebels in the base. - Even more absurdly, she uses the distraction of the blown up base to kiss surprised Finn and dispel her fortune cookie quote (not fighting our enemies, but saving the ones we love). It's the most absurd romance scene in memory. Why all that because she is a Finn fangirl and hates losing people? - She seems a bit dimwitted and judgmental, especially when generally dissing the high society "only war makes you this rich". Which seems to justify her vandalizing and destroying half the casino and city (in another pointless scene of explosions). - Also freeing domesticated animals into the wild is not too bright, they will likely fall prey to predators or hunters, or at worst slowly starve to death. Why not take resonibility for your actions and take care for them, also there were some Anakin-like slave kids, what about them? - Her musical motive/theme is derivative and unimaginative. The actress did a decent job I guess, though sometimes overacting to the CGI environment - but who could blame her?

1. I don't care for her version (maybe any version) of the whole I'm-laughing-wait-I'm-crying shtick. 2. Her deduction of what made the Canto Bight trip successful was pure cringe. 3. The idea to save Finn was pure cringe. 4. The line she delivered after saving Finn was the second cringiest moment of a film that was an all-out cringe fest.

Ha ha, sometimes I read your responses and for a second, I go, "...huh?" and then I remember, "he's quoting again."

When she released the animal and was like "now it's worth it" some people in my theater started laughing.

For those who did like Rose... why? For me Rose was a breath of fresh air, a new character and an addition to the notion of diversity and inclusivity. But most importantly she represents hope and the idea that anyone, even a lowly wrench lugging type, can rise to the occasion and contribute in significant ways.
I know that all sounds corny, but that's what Star Wars is: the corny notion that a farm boy grows up to become a hero and save the galaxy.
Also, I like the idea that Finn can have a girlfriend besides Rey, because Rey totally friend zoned him, and it looks like they're trying to hook Rey up with Kylo anyway (which ewww) .

Please explain this. I saw her contributing in significant ways that were to the detriment of her allies, but never in a positive way.

The actress did a decent job I guess, though sometimes overacting to the CGI environment - but who could blame her? 1) You interpret it that way. I interpret it as she saved his life. The resistance were in danger because they went into that death trap in the first place, not because she didn't let him kill himself. She didn't let him die for the mistakes others made.
2) "she uses the distraction of the blown up base"? Are you sure you don't dislike her? These are some pretty negative interpretations of her actions. She kissed him because she had the feels, dude. She likes chocolate.
3) So you take the side of the decadent war mongers? (I do take your point about the kids though; I thought the same; But I also thought it years ago in TPM when Qui-Gon and Obi Wan don't rescue Anakins mother or any of the Mos Espa slaves).
4) Sure, freeing domesticated animals in not the best move. However, she was acting out of passion and the notion that the animals were being mistreated.
5) Maybe, but wouldn't that be Williams fault, not hers?
Peace, brother

Up until the beginning of the story she was a mechanic/techie type. Then she meets Finn and is instrumental in a mission that helps the resistance. And all the things that attribute to negative were not her fault.
Y'know, there were heavy criticisms of Mary Sue of Rey. Now we get a character who is not that and she gets criticisms for not being good enough. Which is it?

There are tons of characters in SW who don't have ANY powers. What was your case again?

How was she instrumental in a positive way within the actions of completing that mission and how did the mission itself help the Resistance? Everything I saw her mess up was 100% her fault. Did somebody else fly that craft into Finn's craft? Did Force Ghost Yoda take the wheel for a minute?

The character had no purpose at all. I'm not sure what the actress was going for or what the script called for, but the character of Rose was played as an 8 year old; which is a real problem considering the actress is an adult.
