This is an extraordinary, beautiful piece of Americana, notable for its huge sandstone buttes and mesas.
It's notable for being the background for several John Ford Westerns. And there was a scene from the last season of TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL that showed an aerial view of Roma Downey standing on top of a butte. Brrr, she had more courage than I would have had, LOL.
Has anyone ever been there?

My Lovely Wife and I were there in 2009. We spent one night right on the edge of the park in a newish resort on tribal lands. We were lucky enough to get a grand view, essentially what you see in this picture – the two mittens and Merrick Butte. The next couple of nights we stayed off tribal lands in more humble lodgings, Goulding’s Lodge, the first structure originally built in the 1920s as the first place ever for travelers to stay while passing though. This is where film crews from the ‘20s through the ‘50s – and maybe even sometimes today – would stay while shooting movie. Goulding’s hosted John Wayne, John Ford, and Ford’s Rep Company many times. It is a great place to vacation and see some spectacular nature shows and for classic movie fans to track down plenty of location spots.

It's a natural wonder of the cinematic universe for certain. I just think it's kinda funny that The Searchers sets it as Texas, as if everything western needs to be Texas & vice versa.
