I prefer Lethal Weapon 2 over the original. Perfect mix of action, drama and comedy. Best buddy cop film ever IMO. Did you think the condom commercial bit was funny? Danny Glover's reaction to the commercial as he's watching it is priceless.

Personally, I think the original is far, far better than any of the sequels. It is one of if not the best pure action movie ever made.

Lethal Weapon 2 is almost as good as the first film imo.

Did you know that there's an early 1970s tv-film with almost the same plot (diplomats as drug runners) as LW2 (1989)?

I would certainly vote 2 as the best of the sequels, but I also feel all three sequels are enjoyable in their own ways.
2 is the best sequel. It has the best villain-henchman combo of all four films and Pesci's a good addition. The bomb on the toilet bit's a classic. My only gripes about the film are the contrived retconning that the henchman was the one who actually killed Riggs's wife and Patsy Kensit makes for a bland love interest.
3 has the weakest villains of the series, but it has some great action sequences (the opening truck chase, Riggs chasing on a motorcycle and the finale in the burning houses). Rene Russo's also a good addition and she's got chemistry with Gibson.
4 suffers from a character overload and goes a bit overboard with the sitcom humor, but it brings back a menacing antagonistic element in Jet Li's villain and there's some solid action bits. The three-way final fight is pretty damn brutal and a good finale for the series.

Do you think the 5th will & should happen? I really feel they should leave the series as it is. They brought the story full circle with Riggs visiting his wife's grave again, marrying Lorna and having a final scene of everyone as a big happy family. Where else can they take these characters? Plus, Gibson and Glover are both too old to play cops and Richard Donner is 88. The principals are way past their primes to deliver an action comedy.

"Lethal Weapon 4" or "Live Free or Die Hard"?
