I am about half and half on Lubitsch: some times the "Lubitsch Touch" works for me and some times it doesn't I will be totally finished watching all of his sound feature films by the end of this month and may have a few comments about him after I finish (I have also seen a lot of the movies listed below over the last 20 years.) I may just add my comments to this thread rather than creating another thread In the meantime, for those who would like to have a basic set of Ernst Lubitsch movies--by using your DVR, for recording and storage, the end of January may be your best time to gather a pretty good set. Below are the dates and times of his late January showings below (all time will refer to EST): January--- 16 - 9:15 AM - That Uncertain Feeling (1941) 16 - 2:00 PM - Ninotchka (1939) 18 - 8:00 PM - Cluny Brown (1946) 24 - 7:30 AM - Merry Widow, The (1934) 24 - 8:15 AM - Ninotchka (1939) (again) 24 - 11:15 AM - Wildcat, The (1921) [silent] 24 - 12:45 PM - Student Prince in Old Heidelberg, The (1927) [silent] 24 - 2:45 PM - Cluny Brown (1946) (again) 24 - 4:30 PM - To Be or Not to Be (1942) 24 - 6:15 PM - Shop Around the Corner, The (1940) (1942) 24 - 11:00 PM - Trouble in Paradise (1932) (This clever story was my introduction to Lubitsch) 29 - Midnight - Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938) This TCM list is be no means his complete feature films, but it covers much of his basics....including a couple rather rare silents. -------------------------------------- Oh, if only I could find an extant copy of The Patriot (1928).

Thanks for the heads-up, Kijii Always up for another viewing of SHOP AROUND THE CORNER and TO BE AND NOT TO BE It's interesting that in January Charles Boyer is the featured star (TSOTM). My lastest favorite Lubitsch comedy is Cluny Brown (1946). With Cluny you get both Boyer and Jennifer Jones--I love the humorous banter between the two character: Boyer quote - Adam Belinski : In Hyde Park, some people like to feed nuts to the squirrels. But if it makes you happy to feed squirrels to the nuts, who am I to say nuts to the squirrels? Jones paraphrase of quote - My father is always telling me, Cluny, you must know your PLACE, but I don't know how to find my PLACE......

Thanks for the heads-up, Kijii Always up for another viewing of SHOP AROUND THE CORNER and TO BE AND NOT TO BE I often think of the The Shop Around the Corner as a prototypical "modern romance movie" in that is not overly zany or overly dramatic. It is a good story about a young man and woman (where everyone is routing for them to fianely meet and get together). This movie basically give us a story like modern romance movies, in that it builds around everyday life yet still gives us an interesting story. There is no royalty here--as there is so many other Lubitsch movies. There is no long separation and reuniting between the two people. Nor, does it require music as musicals do in these four Lubitsch movies: Eclipse Series 8: Lubitsch Musicals (The Love Parade / The Smiling Lieutenant / One Hour with You / Monte Carlo)
TSATC is a work-related romance like many of us might experience. ..I think people relate to that. I am looking forward to the Luitsch silents. The only Luitsch silent I have seen so far is Eternal Love (1929) with John Barrymore.
