I wanna add one more since a dude mentioned True Romance. Christopher Walken in that film. It was just one long scene, but it was perhaps the greatest scene in movie history

In order for me to consider a specific performance among my favorites, I have to forget that I'm watching the actor - the character they're playing, whoever it is, I need to believe it. Meaning, I enjoy Tom Cruise movies, but I'm always aware that I'm watching Tom Cruise. With that being said, here are a few of my favorite individual performances.
Gabriel Byre in The Usual Suspects (the entire cast really, but mainly him) Viggo Mortensen in G.I. Jane Gene Hackman in Hoosiers Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting Fred Ward in Tremors Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction Jeff Bridges in The Fabulous Baker Boys Leonardo DiCaprio in Blood Diamond Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York Ed Harris in The Abyss Michael Douglas in The Game Kevin Kline in Dave Clint Eastwood in In The Line Of Fire Harvey Keitel in Reservoir Dogs
Sigourney Weaver in Aliens Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road Meryl Streep in...hard to pick just one, I guess Kramer vs. Kramer or Silkwood Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny Cher in Mask Julianne Moore in Still Alice Nicole Kidman in The Others Jodi Foster in Silence of the Lambs Susan Sarandon in Thelma & Louise Michelle Pfeiffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys
To name a few.

It didn't hold up as well as I'd hoped, but still had some great moments. That scene you mentioned for sure, and of course, standout similarly small roles played by Gary Oldman and James Gandolfini.

Yeah, I think it holds up just OK. I'm pretty much with you. Not as well as i thought it would. And yeah, the Gandolfini role is great. His scene when he's calmly giving the speech while beating the shit out of Alabama? So good. And another gentleman mentioned Tom Cruise. And he mentioned his criteria: Not being aware you're watching the actor, but rather the character he is playing. Well, Tom Cruise meets that criteria in Collateral. When I watch it, I feel like I'm watching an Ice Cold, Bad Ass professional hitman, as opposed to a whacky. borderline midget, secretly gay, couching jumping Cult member.

I agree, Cruise was good in Collateral, though it's been a while since I've seen it and don't remember all the details. I think his best performances were probably either Rain Main or Jerry Maguire. I mean, he's generally good in most of his movies, just nothing that makes me say "Wow, give him the Oscar right now."

He owned that role. And Louise Fletcher - so great in that role. I hated her for years after seeing that, that's how great she was in it.

Great actor. Get's unfairly hated on since he's Ben's brother - who also gets unfairly hated on by the masses. Gone Baby Gone (Boston fans you need to watch this if you haven't) is tremendous. Great flick about sticking to your morals even if it means giving up your soulmate all while staying truthful to yourself and profession. Own it - watch it at least once a year. Up there with Mystic River.

I didn't mention The Godfather actors because they're so obviously great anyway - but I do want to give a shoutout to John Cazale (Fredo). He appeared in 5 movies in the 70s before dying aged 42, all of them great, and giving fantastic performances in each of them: The Godfather I and II, Dog Day Afternoon, The Conversation, and The Deer Hunter.

Yup, those 2. I like them both and all. DiCaprio has the luxury of being in pretty solid movies each time out and he's fine in them, but I don't think he's the best part of any movie he's been in. Just my opinion. Leo is one of the top ten actors of all time and I really mean that. He is excellent in so many movies. Maybe the best acted scene I have ever seen was in Shutter Island when he found his kids in the lake. Sure, the movie is not his best and I have seen better acting performances as far as entire movies are concerned, but that one scene is gut wrenching. I have two daughters and I could feel his pain. This is a man with no kids in real life too. It was incredible. He was also excellent in Gangs of New York, though overshadowed by DDL. He was the best actor in The Departed when there was an all-star cast. Sure, Jack was great, but once again he was just playing Jack. He does it well, but still. He was excellent in Revolutionary Road and The Revenant. He should have won an Oscar for The Aviator. Whenever he is in a movie, I know it will probably be good.

Great point. No one ever mentions him and I am guilty too because I did not even think of him, but he was excellent in every role he played. Maybe if he lived people would mention him more.
