I admit that I have a long list of end-of-year films still to see, but from what I HAVE seen, “Battle Of The Sexes” is my current Best Picture.
No tension, eh? Although historical (and I knew how it would end, I saw it live on TV in 1973), the movie expertly laid out the issues being tested. With the women’s movement just starting, with “kitchen and bedroom” ideas of women’s role in society still prevalent, Billy Jean King was breaking down barriers with her new women’s tennis league. Then Bobby Riggs comes around betting huge sums of money on winning matches against women. When Riggs beat Australian tennis star Margaret Court, Billy Jean knew she had to do something. She also had to deal with – and hide – her increasing love affair with her woman hairdresser, which put even more stress into her life.
Another big plus is the two great lead performances. Steve Carell continues to show his range in comedy, drama, and roles like Bobby Riggs that require both skills. Emma Stone can do no wrong. She turns in another fantastic performance. I think I’m falling head over heels for her. She is extraordinarily talented.
Tech credits also exemplary. The early 1970s were recreated in intricate detail. A wonderful film in every regard.
