That is nitpicking imo. I don't have a problem with the second line even if it is unnecessary. It is stating the obvious. They could have turned the second line into something about giving him a pauper's funeral if he doesn't take them to the money. Lithgow's lines aren't very good in the whole movie though. "Get off my back Quaylan!" "Off-I havent got on it it yet." Gruber or Strannix he is not.

I realize it is stating the obvious but it still doesn't bother me and Cliffhanger is a silly B-action movie that isn't meant to be taken seriously. I also don't agree because Lithgow is so menacing that he makes the cheesy lines work. I actually eally like the corny "Off-I haven't gotten on it yet" line. He is no Simon Gruber but you are comparing Lithgow in Cliffhanger to Alan Rickman in one of the greatest action movies of all time. You seem to be one of those all or nothing type movie watchers. Just an observation. My taste is much more broad - I like silly dumb action movies and intelligent action movies. Cliffhanger I rate 7/10 and Die Hard I rate 9/10. Big difference but both are good imo, just for different reasons. It is still nitpicking regardless. I mean if it really bothers you that much than I guess it's a valid complaint but I don't think the dialogue bothers most people in the context of this movie. Now if that line was said in a serious drama then it would be horrible. Such dialogue is often used in silly action movies and it often makes them more fun imo.

He is no Hans Gruber and he is at least as witty as Gruber. I am not being "all or nothing." I found Lithgow's villain to be one of the dullest in these B movie action films. I felt the same in 93. He's ok. That's how I would rate him.

Actually, I think Lithgow made a much more compelling villain (with an accent) in Obsession, so I would fault the screenplay here, not the actor.

Mitch Leary is a very good villain, Hans Gruber is an all time great villain and Qualen is just a good villain. I mostly like Qualan because of Lithgow's awesome performance. I agree that the writing of his character is generic. I do agree about that. A mediocre villain is Killer in Dirty Harry imo. The writing is good enough but I don't find Andrew Robbinson's performance very effective. Luckily Clint Eastwood is there to pick up the slack.

I like him better in Cliffhanger but the writing of his character is better in Obsession. I actually much prefer Clffhanger as a movie though. The best villain performance from Lithgow (and the best written villain he has played) is Arthur Mitchell in Dexter. Absolutely brillaint in that show. Second is his terrifying performance as Burke in Blow Out.

Its a good movie, one of Stallone's best, but still not as good as Daylight(1996)

Scorpio is a different kind of villain--he is meant to be taken seriously unlike Gruber or Stannix or even Leary in some moments. Lithgow doesn't have the entire movie to himself as a villain either--there's the treasure agent and the others. In Die Hard, Gruber's men are much more of a blank than the ones in Cliffhanger.

I also agree that Cliffhanger has better side villains than Die Hard.

I forgot Theo the computer guy is the most developed of the Die Hard supporting villains.
But in Cliffhanger, most of the supporting bad guys have a fair bit to do and have their own quips. I think Delmar and Kynette have the best lines.
"Wrong answer mother fucker!!"

It's always been one of my favorite Sly movies. CLIFFHANGER, RHINESTONE, and EXPENDABLES.
