Since sports scandals and big upsets have been brought up...
For all of his subsequent life, Bubba Smith thought Super Bowl III was fixed.
1. Smith said he knew of meeting between Colts owner Carroll Rosenbloom and NY gamblers. Rosenbloom was a degenerate gamblers who was rumored to have been murdered due to his gambling losses (he wasn't). Smith didn't have specifics but there's little doubt that the Colts owner had connections.
2. Earl Morrall's awful play. The NFL's MVP was 6/17 for 71 years and 3 INT's. Five trips into the Red Zone, zero points. Mostly Morrall's piss poor play calling. He threw a 2nd Quarter INT when Johnny Orr was wide open. WIDE OPEN. And the fact that the Colts played like a new team when Johnny Unitas came in. Yeah, poor QB play does not equal a fix. John Elway would have reaped a ton of cash off his first three appearances.
3. Joe Namath's guarantee. Foolish, but the theorists bring this up. Namath had gambling connections also. Of course, Joe Willie was a tad cocky and a "guarantee" was not out character for him.
4. Everyone benefited. The Super Bowl became an event. The Merger was legitimized. Rosenbloom got his wish and was allowed to trade the Colts for the Rams.
I don't believe it for two reasons
1. Too tough to fix games now. Too many eyes on the games, too many reporters, too much money. Hell, the 1919 Fix was a poorly kept secret. It would have been infinitely tougher 50 years later.
2. Don Shula would have had to have been in on it. Nope, can't see it.
Just throwing this out for shits and giggles...
