So I'm watching the movie AA and how this kid goes to confession.
And the priest tells him that he has to do like 3 Hail Mary's and 3 Lord's Prayer and then he is off the hook or forgiven or whatever.
It hits me right away at how everything, from thinking that one does something wrong through sin to the penance doled out is all just made up by humans.
I mean, first of all the kid didn't sin. It's just a bunch of guilt tripping bullshit and then the penance is created to make him feel better.
Just a bunch of bullshit made up entirely by humans to somehow make themselves feel bad then better all from a book of a bunch of made up stories by other humans.
Religion is bogus.

There are a number of Christians who are more interested in metaphysics and connection with what they see as God™ rather than not eating fish on a Friday and idolatry. |

I haven't seen Angela's Ashes, but I believe that the possibility of confessions is one element of the Catholic church's success.
Some people want to talk about what bothers them, and unlike a therapy session, a confession is free of charge.

There will never be a time that sin doesn't exist will ever be a valid argument against sin existing. |

It sounds like you are still searching. Not sure how to answer except feel a deeper connection with God in my day to day life. |

What did the boy confess? I remember my confession when I was about 8 or 9 and we never really focused on sin (as children). It was more what were some things you want to do better to be more like Jesus? Typical admissions of pouting when my mom or dad told me to do something or teasing my little sisters. The priest told me to give them hugs and tell them I love them. It wasn't really a case of being told you need to be forgiven. It was more trying to live like Jesus would helps us feel His love and show it to others. |

It doesn't matter. the only thing that matters is whether you accept another's view of the sin, unless it's breaking the law (Legality is merely secular sin), unless sin is law since it's a concept and can't be taken away. Guilt, however, is not really a concept. It is what is felt and people can feel it/no feel it without regard to sin. The notion of sin simply outlines whether that is right or wrong in the context of the religious tenets people choose to accept which is why the OP's view of it is completely irrelevant. |

I don't know a single Catholic who says he or she is against birth control for example. I can't even recall a priest speaking out against it. |

Sometimes I call myself a "Zen Satanist." I'm really fond of both Zen Buddhism and LaVeyan Satanism. They're not even particularly "spiritual." They're far more just philosophical, and I agree with a lot of the philosophy of both. |

Confession is designed to make someone feel better about themselves by admitting to a man of the cloth so they can receive absolution from the bogus almighty creator, that is only a creation of the church. Depending on the extent of the action\behavior, there are always going to be universal consequences, we just might not know what at the time. If it is a serious crime that was committed, the priest would have to convince the confessor to do the appropriate thing by taking responsibility for their actions and reporting it to the correct authorities.
Yes, religion is bogus, and for questionable actions by people, to suddenly feel redeemed because they have confessed and will still enter the kingdom of heaven due to believing in what the religion propagates is one big massive crock.
Exactly. You get it to. I don't believe in sin but I do believe in right and wrong and morality and laws. I don't let this guilt tripping bogus stuff known as sin run my life. |
