I haven't seen Angela's Ashes, but I believe that the possibility of confessions is one element of the Catholic church's success. Some people want to talk about what bothers them, and unlike a therapy session, a confession is free of charge. But what makes those things bother them is the conditioning, the brainwashing and dogma the church is full of and that is put into them starting when they are children, which the movie shows. An angry, assholeish god fearing fire and brimstone mean teacher who makes the young boys eat pieces of newspaper to have them practice communion. It is an oppressive atmosphere.

It is sorta and it's also depressing as hell. I like the part where the teacher makes the kid write the essay on why Christ would like Limerick and when he does the opposite he takes him to the headmaster seeking punishment but the kid is rewarded instead. A nice "In your face" moment to the angry, oppressive teacher. I suppose we are supposed to be happy for him that he escapes that hell hole to come to America but what about those he left behind? What happens to them? Felt bad for the mom though.

So I'm watching the movie AA and how this kid goes to confession. And the priest tells him that he has to do like 3 Hail Mary's and 3 Lord's Prayer and then he is off the hook or forgiven or whatever. It hits me right away at how everything, from thinking that one does something wrong through sin to the penance doled out is all just made up by humans. I mean, first of all the kid didn't sin. It's just a bunch of guilt tripping bullshit and then the penance is created to make him feel better. Just a bunch of bullshit made up entirely by humans to somehow make themselves feel bad then better all from a book of a bunch of made up stories by other humans. Religion is bogus. What did the boy confess? I remember my confession when I was about 8 or 9 and we never really focused on sin (as children). It was more what were some things you want to do better to be more like Jesus? Typical admissions of pouting when my mom or dad told me to do something or teasing my little sisters. The priest told me to give them hugs and tell them I love them. It wasn't really a case of being told you need to be forgiven. It was more trying to live like Jesus would helps us feel His love and show it to others. Seems like you had a more enlightening priest than this boy did.

Confession is designed to make someone feel better about themselves by admitting to a man of the cloth so they can receive absolution from the bogus almighty creator, that is only a creation of the church. Depending on the extent of the action\behavior, there are always going to be universal consequences, we just might not know what at the time. If it is a serious crime that was committed, the priest would have to convince the confessor to do the appropriate thing by taking responsibility for their actions and reporting it to the correct authorities.
Yes, religion is bogus, and for questionable actions by people, to suddenly feel redeemed because they have confessed and will still enter the kingdom of heaven due to believing in what the religion propagates is one big massive crock.
Exactly. You get it to. I don't believe in sin but I do believe in right and wrong and morality and laws. I don't let this guilt tripping bogus stuff known as sin run my life. If you believe in right and wrong and morality and laws, then you believe in the concept of sin. you just don;t like calling it that and perhaps. You might not feel guilty when you commit a wrong action or go against your morals too which is why you take issue with guilty feelings. Otherwise, you are a paradox and not qualified to discuss anything regarding religion outside of your dislike for it.

Of course, you do. Got the RFID in your hand yet? Some people have already got 'em, you know. How progressive is that? Go back to your tin foil hat and play triggering word bingo you bubble head, you have nothing to offer here. EDIT: You didn't even have the guts to directly quote me so I would get a notification, you are pathetic.

So religion is bogus because of… Some movie? Whoosh! Eeeeeeehhhhh, not really. That is pretty much what you said. You described a movie and then concluded with the statement, "Religion is bogus." It really is a very poorly constructed comment.

Back in the day, if you had the money, you could even buy your way out of performing the penance for some types of sins. It's one of the things that got Martin Luther so hot and bothered. The Catholic church quickly became so much a money-making business, coupled with its odd under-the-rug treatment of paedophilia and other scandals, it's a wonder its survived as strong as it is to this day.

That's not just 'back in the day', it still happens, at least I know of one instance of my friend, who was a divorced Methodist who wanted to marry a widowed Catholic man and have kids. There was a price tag for having the Catholic Church declare her first marriage as annulled, because First Husband didn't want children and had not been faithful in the marriage. I bit my lip and didn't comment.

Some people in Europe have them to avoid an ID hassle at night clubs. A company in Sweden and a company in Wisconsin have them for their employees. It's all optional. You know, like car insurance used to be optional once.

It's almost as if you can say the reference to the movie wasn't necessary. I guess he could have described the scenario depicted in the film and how it made him dwell on the dynamic without actually mentioning it was in the film, but why on earth he'd need to do so is a mystery. Books and films inspire discussion of their contents all the time.
