Anybody happen to know if Gene Hackman planned to leave acting with Welcome to Mooseport (2004) as the last credit on his resume, or if he is no longer acting because he was 'forced' out (due to health issues, or some other reason) ?? SAVE FERRIS

I think he just felt at the time of "Mooseport" that he wanted to stop so he stopped.

I haven't thought of that. He did Runaway Jury prior to that right? Seemed fine then.

I like him in Enemy of the State and Superman 1, 2 and 4. The Firm with Tom Cruise.

He's done such a good job in so many films. It seems as if he's regularly in some movie on tv and I didn't realize he hasn't worked in so long.

Too bad Sean Connery couldn't do better than "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" as his last film.

This is a lot more simple than people are making it out to be.
Gene Hackman just has no desire to act anymore.

He's 87 years old for goodness sake. He's enjoying a well earned retirement.

On July 7, 2004, Hackman gave a rare interview to Larry King, where he announced that he had no future film projects lined up and believed his acting career was over. In 2008, while promoting his third novel, he confirmed that he had retired from acting. When asked during a GQ interview in 2011 if he would ever come out of retirement to do one more film, he said he might consider it "if I could do it in my own house, maybe, without them disturbing anything and just one or two people." In 2016 he narrated the Smithsonian Channel documentary The Unknown Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima.

Actually Runaway Jury was meant to be his last film, but Welcome To Mooseport got delayed and released first. Still, he always planned to retire. Can't necessarily blame him, he probably never has to work another day in his life. He has written quite a few novels since then, however.
