No matter how you slice it, the film's box office performance was a disappointment. This film was meant to be their answer to The Avengers, and it failed on every conceivable level.
Numbers for Wednesday 1/10/18
Title Avg/Scrn Amount Day
THOR: RAGNAROK $140 $45,469 69
JUSTICE LEAGUE $78 $40,350 55
It's presently running at 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, only 26% from "top critics." It was a huge mistake not to fire Zack Snyder and start over after BvS. If JL is as bad as this suggests (and the critics have largely been correct about all of the WB DC adaptations so far, except WONDER WOMAN), this will be their 5th turd in a row. Too bad.
It probably not even make double its budget (everyone suspects–and they're probably right–that its reported production budget is nonsense and that it cost a lot more). Probably closer to $400 million than $300 mil. Ugh, it should not be happening this way. The Justice League should have been able to be a contender, instead of a necessary sacrifice to put the series on the right track, and whether it even is on the right track now is questionable. Justice League should have been the first one of these huge superhero team-ups to happen.
In fact, Justice League should be the last film in this run; a full reboot should have followed BvS, it especially should have followed JL. The Aquaman movie is already in the can, a consequence of WB's continuing to try to ram these movies through as soon as possible instead of doing it right, but Wonder Woman just made too much money to not do the sequel, Ither than that, though, no sane executive is going to want to continue with this trainwreck. Which doesn't mean they won't; they've kept at it so far, and none of these films should have ever happened, much less been built upon. They've completely destroyed their DC brand and they can't be unaware of this. JL was the biggest property they had, by far–nothing else even comes close–and it was a disaster. No one at WB is going to look at those numbers and think, "That's ok, the solo Cyborg and Flash movies will save us!"
The fact anyone ever defended this mess is amazing!

It may be the shot of Narcan needed to rejuvenate the DCEU. A few of their behind-the-scenes decisions (and dismissals) are a step in the right direction.

There's no way this movie's production budget was close to $400 million. I find it hard to believe that it was $300 million (a figure that I have yet to see in any official source).
Is Marvel beating the heck out of DC in the movie universe war? Yes it is!
Did WB want Justice League to make more money than it is making? Absolutely!
Is Justice League a total failure? No, it is not. It is a minor success.

I removed some of the needless bait from the OP. A slight correction though is that Justice League actually has 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 31% from Top Critics. It also did make double it's supposed reported production budget as well. However yes it is a disappointment. I guess that's why the box office thread is gone. It's still there, just unstickied now.

Well, I don't know what the real production budget is. With the extremely low box office take the movie has, I am pretty sure they (WB) will hide this information to the grave. However, I am still going with what Deadline.com and other professional outlets published: It needed 700 Million to break even. So, I am not going to believe or take into consideration the wet dreams of some apologists that believe this is some kind of success (call it minimal, small, whatever). Please! Do I believe in the people from the industry with better information or in fanbo.. desires?

There’s no way the movie cost $400 million. It cost at least $450 million when you include the marketing costs.

Is Justice League a total failure? No, it is not. It is a minor success. Movies that lose the studio money in theaters are a "minor success"? Who knew??!

They're going to cut their losses there. With all the reshoots they did, that can add up. Solo will be in the same boat since they reshot almost the entire movie and brought in a new actor to replace one that couldn't return for the reshoots.

I understand your point but believe me the studio isn't losing money. Merchandising, promotions, home video, streaming and TV rights will more than turn a profit. The question is whether or not this is a box office success. The rule of thumb for box office success has nothing to do with profit. It is twice the production budget. If a movie makes that at the world wide box office than it is called a box office success and is deemed worthy of sequels.

Maybe they'll get money from the viewing rights, but I don't think people will be running out to buy the merchandising for a movie that wasn't all that good. I'm betting that they won't get all that much from the viewing rights either. WB would be the ones that need the money to recuperate. Streamers don't need to have the movie.
