From this group
I know it’s not everyone, but I think it’s a pretty reasonable representation of the most celebrated artists under the banner. Feel free to list any glaring omissions or personal favorites in your reply. Remember UK only for the purposes of this thread/poll

Echo and the Bunnymen Apologies Echo and the Bunnymen - swear I had them on the list I had, must have missed them when copying across XTC and The Smiths - for better of worse I left out the more poppy/jangly side of post-punk, including a personal favorite of my own Orange Juice, arguably I probably could've omitted The Teardrop Explodes and Television Personalities also Cocteau Twins - never really think of them as post-punk, but yes I probably should have included them Talk Talk - again I've never really thought of them as post-punk and I don't even recall seeing them on the wiki list I browsed to jog my memory Any on there you do like?

But The Chameleons > All of them. Still need to give them a listen. Who would you say they are most similar to, if anyone.

From the list: The Cure Joy Division Wire Swell Maps Public Image Ltd.
Bauhaus and The Jesus and Mary Chain are the only glaring omissions, but The Slits, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Cabaret Voltaire, This Heat, Pink Industry / Military, Adam and the Ants, Clock DVA, A Certain Ratio, Sex Gang Children, XTC, Eyeless in Gaza and so on....The Post-Punk umbrella is so huge, you couldn't list all the bands who fall into the category in one poll...

I remember mentioning in a previous thread about post-punk albums that the genre is a pretty vague umbrella term. It seems to be more about the time period and influences as opposed to any particular sound. Early XTC, Talk Talk and Cocteau Twins were born from the same influences as all of these bands, but definitely evolved beyond that into their own unique things, which is perhaps what I love most about them. Yeah I like/love plenty of bands on the list. Top 5 from that list would probably be: 1. The Cure 2. Souixsie and the Banshees 3. Joy Division 4. New Order 5. The Fall Not familiar with many of them... any "must-hear" rec's?

My Top 5 FeltNice Television influenced guitar work from original member Maurice Deebank in their early more typical post-punk days, they later evolved into organ-heavy indie pop “The Optimist and the Poet”Cocteau Liz guested on “Primitive Painters”Young Marble Giants
Only released one album of subtle clipped guitar brilliance “Brand-New-Life” The Durutti Column
Intricate classically influenced guitar work from Vini Reilly, pretty much the sole member, still active, or at least until very recently as far as I know “For A Western” Fire Engines
Another group that only lasted for one album. Aggressive hyper-angular post-punk-pop from Scotland “Dischord” Swell Maps
Shambolic Art-punk “BLAM!!”

Siouxsie, Gang of Four, Joy Division, Wire, PIL, in that order. I got a Swell Maps compilation a couple years back and enjoyed it. Need to hear more by those guys.

Also, do we include NDW here? Neue Deutsche Welle? Was limiting it to UK bands. If there were UK bands who adopted the style, I would unlikely be aware of many of them. Wanted to limit the poll to about 20 or so artists so it didn't get too unwieldy.

I guess I should retract the Virgin Prunes from my list too, being slightly too Irish to qualify.

How can Wire be Post Punk when the brilliant Pink Flag album was in 1977?!
