The way I score movies is for the personal level of enjoyment, some films may not be a great cinematic masterpiece but if I enjoyed it and it gave me what I ask of it, I will give the movie a higher score.
I have to honestly say I was absolutely impressed by this film. What I want and what I have come to expect for the SAW series is for them to impress me, for the ending to surprise me. I yearn for the filmmakers to keep me guessing enough to astound me with the final twist and I think this has been long gone since about SAW IV... until now.
The previous entries after SAW IV had very predictable endings, my mind wasn't challenged again, they were mere torture porn that lacked the mystery element that drove me to the franchise in the first place; but this movie has turned a 180 on me, the whole final twist was so screwed up, so sutil, it was almost sublime...
I give this film 8 out of 10.
I am now begging for new entries in this franchise, they have revitalized a series where the main antagonist has been dead since a decade ago but it is not letting that small detail (being dead) stop him.

Glad to hear this. I'm travelling at the moment, but this is one of the movies I'm most looking forward to seeing when I get home.
I'm enough of a fan of the series to still be able to suspend my disbelief (like rooting for a friend) at some of the more elaborate plot points. This series is more creative than it gets credit for in my opinion. The later installments had the gore take center stage (I'm a horror fan and don't mind), but the storytelling of the first few doesn't get the attention it deserves. Admittedly, they could lean less on that final music cue...
I had high hopes for this one being a sort of palette cleanser...sounds like I'm going to like it.

You will, the plot twist on SAW I & II have probably been the best in the series but this one is a scream.

I'm glad to hear it sounds better than the last few entries in the series. We knew how V, VI & VII would end. This one you have to watch.

I give it 7/10. Much better than parts 4, 5, and 7. Saw 1-3 is one of my favorite horror trilogies, but 4-7 were a mixed bag. I liked 6 to an extent, but it was never the same.

Which part of the final twist got you? I was spoiled on who the new Jigsaw was, but I'm curious if that surprised anyone since it seemed pretty obvious he was guilty compared to the Jigsaw fangirl and Detective Redherring. But I knew as soon as we saw John Kramer that the whole trap setting was in flashbacks, since they already did that in Saw IV. Didn't see it coming that New Jigsaw was recreating the traps, though. Or that he was the first guy. I did like how scaled back the traps were, compared to the OTT sequels. Though that laser one was an eye roller. I also had a problem with that one guy being tested, as well as continuing to be tested after he sacrificed his leg for the other two.

Yeah the guy being tested more than once was kind of un-Jigsaw like, but I did love that "key" thing. As for who Jigsaw was I did think it was a bit obvious (afterwards) but it still got me, I have to admit it.

I thought the Hoffman movies were the height of the Saw films...so i consider this a step down.
Still hits all those typical Saw film notes tho.

I preferred the slasher serial killer feel to the death trap gratuitous kill scenes feel. I was never a big fan of the Saw franchise until I plowed through and got to Hoffman.

I liked it. My fav Saw after 1 and 2. Still think the traps are too complex, elaborate and not believable, especially the last one. The twist really pushed me to give it a solid 7/10

I was never a big fan of the Saw franchise until I plowed through and got to Hoffman. I felt differently, every movie I wanted him to be killed off. Nice twist on SAW IV, but after that he was just a Freddy with no charisma IMNSHO
