I always liked the guy as a hero. In the Universal horrors, I saw him as an "average guy" caught up by supernatural forces and surviving, along with his lady-love, in the end; but not bland, just not a comic book superhero or a steroidal stud. His characters triumphed by their wits and cooperations with, usually, a wise elder. The "colorful" characters were the villains. And that's the way the scripts were written and the casting was made for the parts. Manners, like the others, was playing his roles as scripted and directed. And that worked for me.

Yes. He was handsome but colorless. Ralph Bellamy was like a house afire compared to Manners.

Every time I see the title of this thread, I misread it as: Was David Manners a blind leading man?
