Both Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor were nominated for best actress Academy awards for their roles in the film (other nominees were Audrey Hepburn for The Nun's Story and Doris Day for Pillow Talk; the winner was Simone Signoret for Room at the Top). They were also both nominated for Golden Globes, which Taylor won.

If filming hadn't already been completed, I would have benched her for the rest of the movie.

Just when I thought I couldn't hate her any more than I already do, I read this. Really? This anecdote makes me like her more. (In the past I was never a huge fan of hers, but the more I learn about her, the more I like her.)

EλευθερίHave you read Katharine Hepburn's book about the making of The African Queen or her Autobiography ? I highly recommend both. She was quite fascinating on and off screen. (imo).

the rest of the article:
"Spiegel then called her into his office to inquire about her treatment of Mankiewicz on the set. ''If I behaved badly, it was on my own time, not yours,'' Ms. Hepburn responded. She then went on to spell out to the producer that his treatment of Clift, to her mind, had been no better than Mankiewicz's. Then, said Raymond, she spat again, but this time on the floor. She later explained to a friend, ''I wouldn't have done it if I hadn't had to; but I had to.' "

I'd never heard that story before but I've long disliked her from the arrogance she displayed on various talk shows.

Just when I thought I couldn't love her any more than I already do, I read this. She had Monty's back, what more could you want in a friend? Instead of a grandstanding gesture in front of the whole cast and crew after filming was completed, why not threaten to walk off the set in mid-production? That would've taken real guts, and would be more than just a vulgar, show-off display. Did she plan on doing the same thing to Stanley Kramer during the filming of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, when there were similar concerns about Spencer Tracy? Or was she out of spit by then?

Rather shocked about the strident criticisms of Kate, but I suppose she’s one of those love-or-hate actresses; I’ve got a family member who can’t stand her (or Bette Davis) and walks out if one of her movies is on. And, of course, I’m a great fan of hers. P.S. Anyone else interested in the way she says “Peabody”? again… These things are comin’ in handy…

What kills me is that people are "judging" her as an actor based on "talk show" appearances. Does not surprise me but ....

She was an actress, they go to extremes. I don't necessarily condone face-spitting, but I do admire her sense of loyalty, and there's no denying her talent.

I'll deny it. She had all the acting talent of a piece of wood, with a face to match.

Myrna Loy--not only a great beauty, but one of the greatest Hollywood actresses of all time. Summary: In over 120 movie roles, 0 Oscar wins, 0 nominations. The Academy has little appreciation of subtlety and no imagination when nominating performances.

H.J.: By the way, I was just reading Garson Kanin’s book on Tracy and Hepburn.
Orson Welles: Hoo boy! I sat in makeup during Kane, and she was next to me, being made up for A Bill of Divorcement. And she was describing how she was fucked by Howard Hughes, using all the four-letter words. Most people didn’t talk like that then. Except Carole Lombard. It came naturally to her. She couldn’t talk any other way. With Katie, though, who spoke in this high-class, girl’s-finishing-school accent, you thought that she had made a decision to talk that way. Grace Kelly also slept around, in the dressing room when nobody was looking, but she never said anything. Katie was different. She was a free woman when she was young. Very much what the girls are now. I was never a fan of Tracy.
H.J.: You didn’t find him charming as hell?
O.W.: No, no charm. To me, he was just a hateful, hateful man. I think Katie just doesn’t like me. She doesn’t like the way I look. Don’t you know there’s such a thing as physical dislike? Europeans know that about other Europeans. If I don’t like somebody’s looks, I don’t like them. See, I believe that it is not true that different races and nations are alike. I’m profoundly convinced that that’s a total lie. I think people are different. Sardinians, for example, have stubby little fingers. Bosnians have short necks.
H.J.: Orson, that’s ridiculous.
O.W.: Measure them. Measure them!
