FAMILY GUY has had a couple of good seasons, a couple of bad seasons and ton of hit-or-miss seasons. AMERICAN DAD has had almost nothing but bad seasons.

American Dad
I love both but American Dad is smarter, has more likeable/relatable characters and is less outlandish. I like that American Dad takes place more in the real world by comparison and I like that it doesn't have cutaways. The cutaways on Family Guy range from funny, to annoying to just lazy time filler. Another reason American Dad is better is that the humor is less broad and mostly keeps to jokes about conservatism vs. liberalism and clever family conflict.
While American Dad has become more mean spirited in the last couple seasons (specifically Roger), Family Guy has always been mean spirited. The show is often hilarious and enjoyable, but it IS a very mean spirited show.

Family Guy. More relatable characters (and I am not even talking about the alien or Brian and Stewie). Scary to think someone so stupid works for the CIA. WHAT??? How is anyone on FG relatable, besides maybe Brian? Stan may be an idiot (though he is a genius compared to Peter), but Stan actually learns lessons that remain throughout the rest of the series. His homophobia for example. Stan has also never made sexual advances on his children. Stan can be an asshole, but he at least is shown to care about his family in a meaningful way. Steve is way more relatable than Chris too. If you are a sociopath I can understand how you could relate more to the characters on Family Guy.

Not really a big fan of either any more but I'll go with Family Guy. American Dad while it has it's moments is pretty much just a re-tread of the same concept.Even if I agreed with that, Amercan Dad would still be a better and more clever version of the same concept. I really don't think they are all that similar besides the basic family set up.

That helps me understand better. The problem for me is that Meg and Brian are the only relatable characters on the show and Meg is a bit on the boring side and not very funny. Everyone on American Dad is relatable on some level for me, with the exception of Roger and Klaus but they make up for it by being hilarious and extremely entertaining. Roger (like Stewie) is very likeable even though he isn't very relatable. Both are brilliant comedy creations imo. Of course I know these are cartoons. What is your point? I am just shocked how anyone could find the characters on Family Guy more relatable. I didn't realize you were just talking about one character.

@ohheybro speaking of horrendous (and I mean this in the nicest way so don't get all ![](https://s26.postimg.org/x9rmpsoex/argue.gif) please .... ) your avatar makes me quite dizzy .... I have to scroll it away out of sight when you are on the page .... do you have a non-FLASHING / non- potentially seizure inducing version perhaps ? Lol sorry. I guess you are right. I will find a new avatar. Now I'm curious as to what the flashing one looked like. Was it Battling Seizure Robots?

The American Dad people are just too eclectic to see how that would work.

Family Guy as a show is more eclectic than American Dad though. The comedy on Family Guy is as broad as it gets. Roger is more of a riot than Stewie imo. As I stated, I love both shows but American Dad is more my style and I relate to the characters more because they act more like human beings with actual opinions and emotions. I'll give you Meg and Brian though. They are the only two characters that are relatable, though I personally don't care much for Meg. Much of the time she just serves as a punching bag for the other characters and it get's tiresome after a while. Family Guy has a lot of bad habits.

American Dad has the alien from outer space played by the ghost of Paul Lynde, so that.

Imagine living your life as meg without the episodes focusing on her getting knocked up or going all gangster (and definitely not the make over one!).

If I had to pick one, I'd go with Family Guy, but it's still pretty overrated.
