on DVD.
Having just recently finished the final season of
The Originals, I pretty much went straight into this show.
I guess that in
episode 1 of the show a Hope voice-over was to be expected, but I kind of grew tired of voice-overs for the starts/ends of episodes some time ago. Thereâs just nothing new/interesting done with them, I find.
Hope and Alaric arriving as a bad-arse supernatural team was a neat way to introduce them and then they busted into a church to stop an exorcism on werewolf guy whose name turned out to be Rafael (it's the first time I can recall seeing more of a âtraditionalâ werewolf transformation in the TVD/TO universe, as in TVD it started off as a lot of crunching noises and screaming and slight changes, then we got werewolfy Hope in TO and now we get a 'typical' transformation and obviously CGI wolf Hope in TO was a precursor to what theyâre gonna have here â ie. CGI wolves.)
Sparkly fireworks for the 'Legacies' title card caught me off guard, as it looked like something that was provided by Jubilee from the X-Men (but I guess they had to set it apart from the TVD/TO title cards which were basically the same).
Good to see continuity with TO where Hope had referred to Josie and Lizzie as the mean girls and here they acted very much like that to her. According to them theyâd tried befriending her, but she didnât want to (I'm guessing that's not entirely true).
Ugh, the return of Landon and his hair (or should that be 'Landon's hair and Landon', since his hair seems more memorable than him?). I appreciated the flashbacks to episodes of TO. Hope not wanting to get close because her parents died makes a certain kind of sense.
'Klaus Mikaelson: The Great Evil' being a chapter in one of the books in the library amused me. Stefan Salvatore got a museum named after him - I'm sure he'd appreciate that.
Can't say Lizzie losing control and mystically trashing her room was particularly endearing (weirdly, the actress playing her - Jenny Boyd - kind of reminds me of Hudson Leick/Callisto from
Xena: Warrior Princess. I'm not sure why). Lizzie really stuck her foot in it with Rafael.
Josie's ex, Penelope (the âequal opportunity evil temptressâ) who smooched MG, annoyed me from the start (speaking of, I thought it was a nice callback to early days TVD when Alaric said he could sympathise with MG not wanting to go by his actual name - I remember when everyone on TVD was commenting how 'weird' Alaric's name was).
They weren't even
trying to hide the Harry Potter-ness when they came up with 'Wickery' (complete with sparkly football). It's amusing they tried Quidditch and it didn't quite work out.
It was just the first episode and
already there was a party (like TVD, I'm assuming there's going to be a lot of those).
I liked seeing Hope and Alaric training together (complete with magic flips from Hope). Meanwhile, there was some nice continuity with Lizzie and Alaric and him saying she inherited her âissuesâ from her motherâs side of the family (Jo was sister to Kai, who WAS a nutjob). Trying to give her calming techniques was good too, and I enjoy the father/daughter dynamic.
I can't say Josie setting her ex on fire (or at least her arm, anyway) bothered me too much since I don't like her ex (though it shows Josie isn't necessarily the 'good one' of the twins). Bad luck for Josie that the next guy Lizzie set her sights on was who Josie was interested in.
Hopeâs cool, Landonâs boring - that's all I have to say regarding them as a potential couple. When Hope went to Josie to do dark magic to find Landon, who'd stolen a mystical knife (
another mystical knife? It'll never compare to 'Papa Tunde's mystical knife of ludicrous torment' from TO, I'm sure - even though it started glowing at the end with Landon on the bus), and she apologised to the rat before sacrificing it...I felt sorry for the rat.
There was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo from Sheriff Matt when Alaric and Hope were talking to him before they found gross corpses on the bus Landon had been on (making it appear he'd killed the other passengers, which was slightly intriguing). Hope voice-overing that sheâs going to be the villain of his story or whatever interested me. Yes, it does depend on
who is telling a story as to who is presented as the 'hero' and 'villain'.
Most important question: where was Caroline? Most likely answer: they can't convince Candice Accola (now Candice King) to guest star.
In
episode 2, I didnât care about the Lizzie/Josie/football game of losing on purpose and dealing with opposing mean team storyline (and I still donât like 'equal opportunity evil temptress' Penelope either). Landon and Rafael bore me, though sometimes it seems like they think of each other as
more than friends.
Oh joy,
human dragons (because that was SO GREAT in
Supernatural...NOT). There were alright effects used for the actual dragon...at least in the far away shots, anyway. Not so much the closer shots of it (they probably shouldâve just stuck to showing its shadow).
Alaric seems to treat Hope as his 'enforcer' who enlists her to go after/kill who he wants, but gives her a stern talking to when she wants to get stabby (and it's not on his behalf). Alaric = hypocrite because he kills dragon girl but warns Hope against becoming like Klaus (then again, dragon girl burned a busload of people so...).
Lizzie is bratty with her temper tantrum-throwing, but occasionally shows vulnerability with how she wants her dad to love her and her sister more than Hope (who apparently wants Landon dead...canât argue with that). And now there are gargoyles, but
still no Caroline (boooo!).
Episode 3 started with a gargoyle flashback (it seemed the show was ripping off âBlinkâ/the Weeping Angels from
Doctor Who a bit).
Still donât care about Landon or Rafael and their making money off his werewolf parkour skills. Why do Hope and Rafael like Landon so much? He so
boring.
Germy from TVD guest-starring was very meh, and he sounded bored (probably ticked he got kicked off
Chicago Fire).
MGâs vamp pal, Kaleb, feeding on mean girl Dana and compelling her (after MG compelled her earlier - she's gonna wind up with brain damage or used/abused like Caroline was by Damon in Season 1 of TVD) while saying heâs not hurting anyone...um...
really?? I don't like him or his "vamps before tramps" mentality.
Josie is mad at Alaric for seemingly putting Hope above them because they have 'secrets' together (oh, don't start in on
that, Josie. The last thing this show needs is characters whining about 'secrets and lies'). On the plus side, Josie bonded with Hope and seemed to be friendly with her and Hope stood up for her against Lizzie who 'threw her under bus', but then Josie was pissed Alaric jumped in front of Hope to save her from knife-wielding gargoyle and basically said right in front of her he shouldâve let her get stabbed/possibly die? Not cool, Josie. The poor gargoyle was guarding Alaric and got killed for his trouble (though he did give Lizzie greyscale, so...)
Carolineâs off 'recruiting' apparently - that's supposed to be the excuse for why she's not around.
Episode 4 started with MG's nightmare within a nightmare - firstly a giant gorilla (apparently it was Gorilla Grodd from
The Flash - a TVD-verse/DC-verse crossover nobody even realised), then Ghost Face from the
Scream films (which, coincidentally, I just rewatched on Blu-ray this week).
Alaric being the Giles to Hopeâs Buffy in training with fighting sticks and talking throughout is something I don't mind (though Alaric is certainly not up to Giles' standard of mentor and Hope has a ways to go before she kicks arse as much as Buffy).
I found lizzie amusing with her over-the-top 'hero' talk, her "I volunteer as tribute.", and reassuring bitten Dana that she had the mother of all hickeys/she was "just a little slutty". Meanwhile, I still donât like Kaleb, his "vamps before tramps" BS, his flippant attitude towards the death of Dana, or him biting and compelling girls into forgetting. Speaking of Dana, she got what was probably one of the WORST deaths ever in the TVD-verse: literally vomiting up her insides until nothing was left but skin, hair and a lot of black goo - ICK! This serious matter seemed brushed off far too easily.
I was amused by Hope getting Landon off her back by telling high school girls who came to her rescue that he kept trying to give her his mixtape.
And then later on when she was sporting cute ears that were given as a gift to her by the girls.
I saw elsewhere the slow-motion moment towards the end of the episode called the âHero Strut of Slime-Covered Hope, Lizzie and Josieâ...and I think that pretty much summed it up (they were covered in exploded spiderman guts).
Josie wanted to learn offensive spells, not just defensive, as Hope knew them and that was what helped save them. Lizzieâs jealousy of Hope was wearing thin, while Josie having to siphon magic by kissing Rafael in spidermanâs web was a bit eyeroll-worthy. The alpha werewolf, Jed, forcing Rafael to confess how he triggered his curse - that...happened, as did Matt appearing in the episode (I have to say, his cameos have been rather lacklustre thus far). I couldn't really take his threatening Alaric (if he didnât sort out his school kids) and Alaric doing the same back seriously. It's interesting how each episode seemingly ends in a way that directly leads into the next episode.
In
episode 5, I wouldnât have known it was Amy Manson as the dryad had I not seen her name in the guest stars credits (at least not until she started speaking, anyway). She was very 'otherworldly'-looking, I thought.
Oliver, who didnât remember her, seemed rather random/pointless, but at least let Alaric and Dorian know thatâs why no one remembers these mythical creatures exist. It was sad that the dryad couldnât control herself and fought them to take the knife, which resulted in Dorian offing her (they couldâve tried to stop her some other way) and then him taking her to a place where she turned into a nice tree.
I thought it was very Harry Potter-esque with the voting (and the votes flying up out of the chest like in
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Lizzie was funny with her premature victory speech practicing. I hated that Kaleb, manipulator of MG, got elected by tricking MG. Meanwhile, Josie won instead of Lizzie thanks to shit-stirrer, Penelope (who I wish would get gone), Lizzie was upset over Josie getting the most votes and not even being runner-up (later she magicked the punching bag to bits, had sandy sex with Rafael and consequently made me think of Anakin Skywalker's sand speech), good on Hope for just basically saying "Iâm a tribrid and represent me.", and Landon left - yay!
I didn't like the fact that Rafael only did the deed with Lizzie because he was pissed at Josie for not voting to keep Landon at school and so he decided to have a one-night stand with her sister.
Other random thoughts this episode:
School politics = blah.
Locked up Kaleb is eligible to be voted for?
I thought the bus was going to hit Hope and Landon as they smooched, but instead it was just providing backlighting, apparently.
Episode 6 felt like the best episode so far, as no Landon and no Kaleb automatically made it better, plus we got to see Jo from TVD again! Alaric immediately aiming the crossbow at her made sense, I guess (last time on TVD it was some other person in her body), but I still felt bad for her. Jo was gracious/mature about Caroline birthing/raising her kids. When Alaric said Jo was the love of his life, I couldn't help but think, "Too bad, Jenna and Isobel!".
I felt bad for Josie as, unlike Lizzie, she seemed genuinely happy to see her mum back and wanted to spend time with her. I then felt a bit sorry for Lizzie when jerky Rafael was saying he was mad and Lizzie was "there" (in reference to the sex he had with her just because Josie voted for Landon to get the boot - like, way to make it romantic, Raf. "You were there." is
totally the reason every girl wants to hear some guy got with them). Lizzie looked happy with MG until Raf showed up and kind of made her forget about him. Bad time to tell Lizzie you donât want to be with her, Raf. ON HER BIRTHDAY?!
I didn't like Dorian and Emma - and even Alaric - for most of the episode, since they were so against Jo (thankfully, by the end Alaric realised this was his last chance with her). When Jo was warning him about the Parker 'Merge' thing thatâll happen at age 22 for the girls, it made me think that either the show hopes to last long enough for the girls to reach that age or there's going to have to be a time jump.
Apparently the
real reason Caroline's not around is because she's trying to find a way of getting the girls out of 'the Merge' happening to them (feels more like the writers were just struggling to think up excuses for Caroline to not be present).
Hey...we got zombies! MG saying everyone knows to go for a walkerâs head and Penelope saying "Just call it a zombie." was the first time ever that I liked anything she said. Some nice violence with the zombies - including Hope slicing a face in half and the delayed sliding off like in
Underworld. I like that Hope has her own 'Avengers Squad'/'Super Squad'.
I thought the show did a good job of having a very emotional goodbye to Jo (up until now, the show hadn't really managed anything of that level emotion-wise). I was glad Lizzie apologised for being rude to Jo, and Jo was very understanding (not sure she really got to know Lizzie well enough to talk about her 'big heart', though).
The necromancer which the episode ended with was OTT with the dramatic music starting and stopping and felt way too cheesy. I thought it was a character playing dress-up and trying to scare Alaric and Dorian (who just seemed as annoyed as I was by him).
In
episode 7 we had no Lizzie or Josie, but frickinâ
Kaleb was back being a bad influence on MG.
Alaric telling the necromancer literally nobody knew who he was when he was boasting, plus Hope calling him out on his saying the same things umpteen different ways, was amusing.
I like Hope and Raphael together better than Hope and Land-yawn.
It was weird that the necromancer talked about locks like they were keys (the stuff he was saying would've sounded more right if he'd said 'keys'). When he told Hope that Klaus was watching over her (a la Hayley in TO final) and needed peace, I thought it strange there was no mention of Elijah (and even in death Klaus is a creeper).
Episode 8 was just Hope and Alaric on a road trip, but at least Ayelet Zurer guest-starred (yay!)...though Landon was back (boooo!).
Alaric constantly quizzing Hope, much to her annoyance, was somewhat amusing.
I was worried something bad would happen to the dog after Landon fed it some of what he was eating, but luckily it was just unconscious. Still...poor pooch.
Alaric catching Hope and Landon making out on bed was another amusing moment, as was the merman turning up and the reactions to it. Despite Landonâs mum going into 'Satanâs mud bath' (aka Malivore) after being injured (which is what makes people forget about all the mythical creatures), Hope remembered everything (I guess thanks to her being a tribrid/supernatural turducken - ie. witch/vampire/werewolf). I wish we'd gotten more episodes with Ayelet Zurer's character, as she was the first adult character (other than Alaric) to really stand out/make much of an impression.
Episode 9 was the requisite 'nightmare' episode (which these types of shows always seem to have).
Lizzie and Josie were still missing...but Kaleb was still around (grrr).
So many rip-offs from BtVS âNightmaresâ episode, I thought - Landon taking a test that he didn't know any answers to, the pencil breaking, suddenly appearing in his underwear, telling himself to wake up, etc.
Never have I heard the words 'night hag' mentioned so many times (she was also called 'oneiroi' and 'dream demon' - a monster of many names, apparently).
Kaleb a member of Hope's 'Avengers Squad'? Boooo! He got the Hannibal Lecter mask and
A Clockwork Orange treatment for vamps in his nightmare, while Raf dreamed of himself turning whilst tied to a tree (with Hope making a move on him) and MG had a dream about himself becoming a 'Ripper' - complete with girlâs head falling off.
At least Hope didnât hide the mystical urn in a soap dish like Damon did with the moonstone (instead she hid it under her pillow - which I'm sure is somewhere no one will look).
Episode 10 was interesting after we saw the title card of âLizzie Saltzmanâs Legaciesâ and the fact that a genie was involved (no, I don't care that she kept 'correcting' Lizzie on her name. You're blue and grant wishes - you're a genie!).
Fat, bearded, day-drunk Alaric was somewhat amusing (though, liker Fat Thor in
Avengers: Endgame, a pretty cheap joke).
Nice to know Lizzie can utter a frustrated âson of a bitch!â that would make Dean Winchester from
Supernatural proud. She also learned of 'the Merge', but forgot it after making her last wish and was - according to the genie - apparently going to go 'mad' because on some level she remembered it...or something? That bit was confusing. While it was interesting seeing the different realities (and how Hope kept turning up in all except one, much to Lizzie's annoyance), this episode certainly wouldn't give the BtVS Season 3 episode 'The Wish' a run for its money (that one is still the standard I compare all others of this ilk to). Hope tried to invite Lizzie to help cast a spell, but she refused - so I don't buy the story that we were told at the start of the season about her 'trying' to make friends with Hope and Hope refusing. Seems like quite the opposite to me.
In
episode 11, my thought process was pretty much "Yay! Unicorn! Boo! to Alaric and Dorian wanting to off it! Yay! to Hope stepping front to save it! Boo! to unicorn keeling over/dying from slug!".
Hope âslug drunkâ was amusing.
Everyone else was slug drunk too except Lizzie who had a bracelet that zapped her whenever she said something mean.
The talent show was boring - too much singing (Kaleb, Emma - and Alaric - Josie, Landon...what was this, a musical?). Lizzie calling Landon âthrift store hobbitâ amused me at least.
As if I didn't dislike Kaleb enough, after her good job singing, MG had to
make Kaleb applaud her like everyone else was (which shows just how full of himself Kaleb is. He's happy to accept applause from others, but not
give it).
How did Alaric not see a slug was in his drink? Consequently, his eyes turned a cartoonish green and he threw the urn into a lake.
Episode 12 ended up turning into another road trip episode. All Emmaâs screaming got on my nerves. The road trip with 7 people packed into a van was like the road trip from hell. Lizzie being at Hopeâs throat the whole time and petulantly asking Alaric "Are we there yet?" got annoying. Josieâs vomiting would've been horrible to be stuck with too. We got a rather forced episode title mentioned by Josie regarding a mummy being on Main Street. The reveal that Josie was the one who drove a wedge between Hope and Lizzie because she feared Lizzie would go after everyone she liked left me thinking that was some faulty logic/motivation on Josieâs part. Unless Lizzie is bi and I missed it (which I may have), Josie has no reason to worry about her going after Hope like she has with guys that Josie's had a thing for.
Whyâd we get guest star Kaleb so much and not MG (who is a regular)? Evidently they're trying to make his character more significant, but I ain't interested. Dorian acting immaturely about Alaric and Emma kissing and him punching Alaric/quitting just made him look like one of the students.
So long, urn-which-got-tossed-into-Satan's-mud-bath-at-the-end!
I thought
episode 13 had some weird editing in the beginning, with choppy jumping around. Apparently, Paul Wesley (aka Stefan Salvatore) directed it. I don't remember his directing being so distracting previously.
MG and his father not knowing he was A) still alive, and B) a vampire made for some interesting stuff...too bad Kaleb was also involved (speaking of, he shouldâve taken responsibility for MGâs losing control later in the episode, since
he encouraged him to feed on people and Dorian had warned him that MG was vulnerable to turning all Ripper-y, but no, all Kaleb could say was that anyone who had a problem with MG would have to come through him. I just rolled my eyes at that, same as I did when he called MG's parents 'monsters'. It's easy to slap labels on people, but MG's father only just learned two shocking revelations in a row and wasn't even given time to process. Shut up, Kaleb).
MG killed Landon, and for a moment I thought the show might've really 'gone there'...but, sadly, no. I was glad to see that Alaric knew Hope needed a minute, but would heal MG from Rafâs bite despite what he'd done to Landon (shows how good she is). Grrr, we were almost rid of Landon...but then he turned out to be a phoenix (I guess this show must've seen all the phoenix speculation back in early
Teen Wolf days and since it never amounted to anything on that show, they decided to use the idea here). It was a nifty effect at least, I'll give them that. Though how convenient for Landon that he's reborn from his ashes complete with clothing (not that I was interested in seeing a nekkid Landon).
In
episode 14, Hope & Lizzie (Hizzie?) was my new favourite pairing now that Lizzie was acting civil towards Hope and wanting to help her win the Miss Mystic Falls pageant (whilst also helping her vent).
Their pinky swear at the end of the episode, where they promised to help each other get Josie and Landon back, was kind of cute.
I was glad shit-stirrer Penelope left (though she still manged to cause trouble
before she left - reading everyone's diary entries, mentioning 'the Merge' and that Hope was wearing the dress Klaus gave to Caroline in TVD).
Gorgon girl was mildly interesting, but just turned out to be a lackey for MG's mum (who I never liked - and that turned out to be good instincts, as she was revealed to be working for evil Triad).
I quickly got sick of Landon being angry at Hope after learning she knew about his mum taking the plunge into Satan's mud bath. Yes, she lied...but
everyone lies. Get over it.
Roman from TO was back...and with longer hair (oh joy).
Episode 15 gave us the story of Landon's lineage/creation - heâs a mud robotâs descendant (ha-ha!). Prism Landon and his interaction with Hope was better than real Landon. He was actually
likeable. Hope learned what 'the Merge' was and Alaric finally told the twins. To my surprise, Roman helped out Hope (and was at least less petty than Landon was with his jealousy last episode).
Great time to leave the school, Emma...just as Triad stormed the school.
Episode 16 (aka Season 1 final) seemed to have all the snappy dialogue the show lacked throughout most of the season crammed into this one. Seriously, there were SO MANY good one-liners from various characters that I can't even remember them all. However, I think my favourite was Lizzie's comment to Josie about that face she always seems to make.
She's not wrong.
The Triad goons were pretty lame. The head goon had his gun aimed at various characters multiple times and only *once* did he actually bother
using it - which resulted in Josie getting shot to save Lizzie. I thought both Kaylee Bryant and Jenny Boyd did a good job (possibly their best work) in this episode with the scene of the twins making up (but still arguing as they did so) because they thought one of them was going to die. I liked hearing Lizzie call Hope their 'friend' after how they started out the show.
That bloody skull fountain was pretty weird-looking (apparently Alaric had it in place to use as a last resort against the students if they turned feral, since it nullified magic - hey, Travelers-from-TVD reference...bleh, I
hated the Travelers from TVD). I honestly don't blame him for having a fail-safe. At least he was honest to everyone about it (though that honesty will probably come back to bite him).
MG's speech to Kaleb about being 'better' by *not* killing the Triad goon is the reason why I prefer the MG character to Kaleb. I liked seeing MG stepping up/being awesome (I just wish we could've been rid of Kaleb. Hell, I even grew to like
Jed - the werewolf who hates Landon and was not nice to Raf in the early episodes - more than Kaleb. At least in part because they're not trying so hard to 'make Jed happen' like they are with Kaleb. It honestly felt like Kaleb had more screentime than Lizzie/Josie/MG/Raf at times this season, which would be fine...except they're regulars and he's a guest star. It should be the other way around. I know that, sadly, we're stuck with him). I don't mind Gorgon girl or that she helped out MG, but I hope we've seen the last of MG's mum.
Hope and Landon had some good exchanges this episode...too bad it took until the
season final for that to occur. I enjoyed his reactions to the Headless Horseman (âseeing eye horseâ/âemotional support horseâ? HA! It's a shame that the show didn't decide to have a crossover with
Sleepy Hollow like it did with
The Flash). What was it with this episode and skulls/bones? First, the bloody skull fountain and then the spinal whip? It was funny that Landon joked about 'phoenix combat' and how lame it was, but then he spinal-whipped his mud bro and (seemingly) killed him, which impressed Hope. Of course, Hope fully embraced her Buffyness and kicked Headless Horseman arse which would make almost anything Landon did look lame by comparison (I liked that he enjoyed watching her kick arse). She then made the full transition into being Buffy by sacrificing herself via taking a swan dive into Satan's mud bath (after discovering her âpurposeâ in being a supernatural tureducken - ie. the only thing to close Malivore, much like Buffyâs blood was the only thing to close the hell dimension). Though, unlike Buffy, she managed to magic Landon's mud bro into mimicking her and so he went right along with her into the goo.
Both Danielle Rose Russell and Matt Davis did a good job with their emotional goodbye to each other (I think they're the 'heart' of this show. It
started with them, after all), but I think it would've been even more effective had it not taken place over the phone. I guess Raf is stuck in werewolf form until Hope can be brought back to change him back (though can't the twins magic him back to human form somehow?). The fact we heard him talk about his mind being all screwy and somewhere between his human and wolf form at one stage (if I remember correctly) makes me think he might be the only one who'll remember Hope - which is what she's going to need to be brought back again.
I'd known before even starting this show that it was going to be quite a bit different to TVD and TO. I'd heard there was things like dragons and gargoyles, so those didn't come as much of a shock to me when watching. I like Hope the best. I'm glad we got to know her on TO first, as she anchors this show. Her quasi father/daughter relationship with Alaric is good (much better than her 'romantic' relationship with Landon at any rate). Josie and Lizzie were characters I wasn't too sure about in the beginning, but they got more interesting as the season went on (and when they weren't missing from several episodes in a row). Josie started out as 'the nice one', but showed over time that she could get pretty 'dark' and ruthless, while Lizzie probably made quite a few people hate her (and I must admit I wasn't that fond of her in the beginning), but I grew to like her a bit more over the course of the season. She actually got quite a few amusing lines and showed there was more to her than just being a 'bitch'. Most of all I was thankful that she and Hope were eventually getting along - too bad their new friendship was cut short (now Lizzie gets to see what a Hope-less world is
really like).
Of the guy characters, MG probably came off looking the best. He was a decent guy who just unfortunately became friends with someone he probably shouldn't have. Raf was okay some of the time (though annoyed me at times too). I liked him and Hope together. As for Landon...well...at least he got mildly interesting/tolerable in the final couple of episodes. Here's hoping he continues to improve next season. The best thing he did, however, was inspire Lizzie to come up with all the amusing nicknames she gave him.
While this show certainly wasn't on the same level as the first seasons of TVD or TO, at least it wasn't as bad as the later seasons of those shows. It felt like a cross between early days BtVS and Harry Potter. It showed promise and hopefully Season 2 will be where things really kick into gear. Unfortunately, I'll be waiting a while until the next season comes out on DVD here and I get to see it (I was also annoyed to discover there were no extras on the Season 1 DVDs. Bah!).
