He was the actor they wanted. He was contractually obligated to Magnum P.I. and could not accept the role. Harrison Ford was cast in his place. Could Tom Selleck be as good in the role as Harrison Ford? I say yes. I wouldn't say he would be better but he could have been as good or even better. I'm likely in the minority here.

Personally, I would've hated it. He's okay in some roles, but not Indiana Jones. That would've been bad, like if Will Smith had played Neo in The Matrix (which almost happened).

Having seen Tom Selleck play the adventurer role in 'High Road to China' (1983) I think he'd probably had been solid but nothing particularly special. The thing with Ford playing Indiana Jones is that there's this extra edge to it, especially in early scenes of Raiders and a good chunk in Temple of Doom. I didn't quite get that with Selleck.

Tom Selleck had an "extra edge" in these roles- www.imdb.com/title/tt0097579/?ref_=nv_sr_1www.imdb.com/title/tt0401504/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_18I think he would have been an excellent Indiana Jones.

Will Smith characters to me seemed too immortal & perfect around that time... Keanu felt more underdog which helps the first movie.

i think, not knowing about an alternate universe where ford played indiana jones, people would have loved the movie and thought of tom sellek as a cool guy and loved his indiana jones. the story, the direction, the fx and the music have a lot to do with what made that movie great.
not sure how the sequels would have gone though.

I was going to say something like that. The only way to judge would be to find an alternate universe where Tom Selleck played Indiana Jones, then take a copy of that movie and another copy of Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones to an universe where neither exists and ask the people there to choose.

IMO Selleck would have been fine .. different but FINE ! Love the alternate universe idea in these ^^^^ posts.
Selleck is terrific as Jesse Stone (which is neither here nor there and just a train of thought about him not ONLY being Magnum.)

wmcclainI have looked forward to each one. They introduce the characters, develop everything and do not rush. For me, that is key to great story telling. Selleck IS Jesse Stone ! (imo) somehow even more so than that he IS Magnum.

Harrison Ford was 39.

I don't like Selleck as Indy (imagine the fight under the flying wing). Ford comes off as a scrapper where Selleck comes off more like Charles Bronson...cheese action. I dug that they had Ford bleeding a bit while smiling. Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't imagine a grin like that from Selleck.
All that said, I wish they'd have had Selleck in "The Last Crusade" as a brother, extra, friend, etc. Selleck is as badass as they get...would have been nice to see him and Ford alongside each other a bit. Ford made the role his own...I think "Raiders" might have been forgotten if it weren't for his performance.
Maybe the gate agent who Ford threw off the blimp could have been Selleck...he had a place in this universe (I don't think it was as Indy) and should have gotten a cameo especially after "Raiders" did so well.
Indiana Jones is Harrison Ford (mulligan given to Crystal Skull), and I think there's a lot more Ford than there is Jones in the performance. Love Selleck, but I'm glad he was tied up enough to cast Ford.
