What do you mean, moviebuffbrad? That he actually directed that movie? Yeah, that creepy clown! According to rumors, he was more the director than Hooper was. Thank you, movieman!

According to rumors, he was more the director than Hooper was. Thank you, movieman! Yeah. He couldn't direct ET and Poltergeist at the same time for legal reasons, so he had Hooper stand in as director while he himself basically did all the work. Most of the cast and crew say they were directed by Spielberg.

Some of the scarier scenes have a Hooper feel to them imo. The movie itself feels like a perfect combination of both of their styles.

I can see a little Hooper perhaps for the skeletons in the pool scene, especially since they were real skeletons.

It feels more Hooper than Raiders imo, but I understand the argument. I think yo are talking more in terms of what is happening in the scene and the way the gore is directed. I am referring to a subtle tone in the scene that feels similar to Spontaneous Compustion and Lifeforce. You can feel it more during the pool scene and the TV scene. Actually the whole movie after the first TV scene has a feeling of dread that feels similar to most of Hooper's movies.

I suppose, but that's because the entire film's look and tone oozes Spielberg to me, so it's more in these small details that I look for hints of Hooper. I haven't seen Spontaneous Compustion, but I have seen Lifeforce (as well as Eaten Alive, The Funhouse, and the TCM movies) and Poltergeist just doesn't have the same grittiness I get from Hooper.

I said the movie feels like a combination of both and it does feel more Spielberg than Hooper, but there are hints of Hooper at many parts. Of course Hooper's other movies are more gritty because he is directing them alone. If Spielberg was co-directing Lifeforce for example, the movie would have a much different feel.
