I have been using formatfactory but it wont let me convert a file that has dual audio--it always defaults to the first no matter how I fiddle with it.
I also have used Any Video Converter Professional but it is buggy--wont give me default video res sizes, and sometimes it cuts the duration.
Any others which may be reliable?
I need to convert MKVs to avi.

Never download anything from download.cnet.com (formerly download.com); it's chalked full of malware.
Freemake is the only other that I can think of other than Any Video Maker which I've always used.

You shouldn't be converting video files. EVER. You lose quality that way. You want your MKVs to become AVIs? I'm guessing because you need to play them on some device that can't read MKVs such as a PS3. Well there's no need to convert. Simply use the program MKV2VOB to demux your MKVs into MPEGs. (MKV is only a container, and inside it is an MPEG video track. The program basically takes the MPEG video out of the MKV container. MPEG should be playable on pretty much anything as far as I know) www.videohelp.com/software/mkv2vob
