One of my favorite films and one that 23 years later is still controversial and draws a split reaction among many. I find it's a brilliant satire on the media's irresponsible habit of glorifying murderers and their crimes and how they've made our culture one obsessed with violence and fame. The message of anyone can be a celebrity and how there's no line between fame and infamy is one that while relevant then is moreso than ever now. The performances by all are excellent, with the standouts including Woody Harrelson as the deadly yet charismatic Mickey Knox, a pre-Iron Man Robert Downey, Jr. as sleazy and fame-seeking tabloid journalist Wayne Gale and a scene-chewing Tommy Lee Jones as the profane and hot-tempered prison warden. The film is also noted for it's unique filming style with how it switches between formats and switches between colors, which helps to give it a manic, desensitized feeling reflective of the media's presentation of violence.
It's not a film for everybody for sure but it stands as a major favorite of mine. I find it's even more relevant to today's society than it was back in 1994. Very much ahead of it's time.

Really didn't care much for it when I first saw it. Oliver Stone seems guilty of the same thing he is criticizing. Rodney Dangerfield is great, though.

It is a terrific satire about how society romanticizes murderers. It is both criticizing it and relishing in it at the same time and that makes the movie even more fascinating and it also makes it funnier. In broader terms it is more of a commentary on how nuts society is in general.

Anyone else who's seen it, anyone else disturbed by the scene with the hostage in the motel room? That scene always stood out to me, just very perverse to me.

Good flick. I agree that this is kind of a movie ahead of its time with the whole concept of how one can be famous for doing even the most notorious things. It seems like a very divisive film among critics. I mean, Roger Ebert himself gave this a 4/4 and considered it a masterpiece, while others say it's terrible because of the over-the-top representation of violence and media. I give the movie an 8/10.

I thought it was a clever script and smart satire that got bogged down with OTT direction and performances.

10/10 Excellent film. Woody Harrelson gives one of the best and scariest villain performances I have ever seen.

Great film. It was a different kind of role for Dangerfield, and he pulled off the creepy pedophile perfectly. I found his performance brilliant and disturbing. Really, everyone was great in that movie.

I was pretty sheltered as a youth and wasn't allowed to watch R movies at the theater and the only ones I was allowed to watch at home were pre-screened it's-R-because-language types...Arnold's movies, stuff like that. So I had just turned 17 when this movie released and saw it in theater. Can you even imagine that? Like, Predator and Total Recall are the type of R movies I had seen before then and I walked into this thing.
It's a great film. Probably somewhere in my top 60 or so.
