As much as people bitch about remakes, and as much as Hollywood does do them too much, it's not as hard to name one is you think.
There are several on this thread that I agree with, but I will add a few of my own. I like the original Planet of the Apes very much, but these new movies are absolutely better. The Crazies is a very enjoyable horror movie. If we expand the conversation to television, it opens the door even more.

The Departed always pops in my mind in these topics. I had no idea that was a remake. IMDb confirms it, though, but doesn't list the original foreign one. Was it any good? Who was in it?

The original is a very good movie, but I saw it after The Departed and I preferred The Departed.

True Grit (2010) - 8/10 (within my Top 61 movies) vs True Grit (1969) - 4/10 (below average) pretty big gap in quality from original to remake there which is probably the largest gap between a original and a remake for me most likely. marlonbrawndo it's Infernal Affairs (2002) but that movie is forgettable simply because it's cast don't have the screen presence that The Departed (2006) does. i think that's pretty much the bottom line. The Departed (2006) - 7/10 (within my Top 199 movies) Infernal Affairs (2002) - 5/10 (Thumbs Down)

Scorsese is my favorite director.

I thought I was picky LOL.

Granted i also love asian cinema, that helped me like the original also

Cape Fear
Uncommon opinion but that's my answer. I second that I'll--er--"third" it. One of the few remakes I prefer to the original.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (2004-2009) > BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (1978)
THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) > BATMAN (1966-1968)
MIAMI VICE (2006) > MIAMI VICE (1984-1990)

The Haunting. (Not a joke. I hate the original film. I hate the book, too. I like the remake.) Interesting. I do not by any means prefer the remake, and, unlike you, I greatly enjoy the book, but I did find the remake had more interesting elements than critics gave it credit for. I mentioned it here and here.

I just think The Departed is one of the most entertaining movies ever made and is endlessly quotable featuring a great cast at the top of their game. I also love the humor in the film. It almost feels like a cop/gangster comic book or something.
The Departed is definitely top 10 Scorsese for me. Probably #8.

The Fly (1986). It's at least as good as the 1958 film - and arguably better.
Also, the 2004 version of Dawn of the Dead is about on a par with the 1978 film (and actually has a much stronger final act IMO).

Only one I can think of is Carpenter's "The Thing" and that wasn't really a remake as it stayed truer to "Who Goes There?"

I love both Wages of Fear and Sorcerer, but I think Sorcerer is more effective.
