And yours stinks and is full of shit. I wouldn't say that...Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made $475,968,763 million dollars worldwide at the box office, which is $431 million more than the original made, am I correct??? You're not really proving your point. You're actually proving flauss point more. Wouldn't this be just as irrelevant but more relevant than box office?
Original Willy Wonka and the:
7.8/10 IMDb
89% Rotten Tomatoes
90% Google users
Travesty Charlie and the:
6.7/10 IMDb
83% Rotten Tomatoes
83% Google users
Also remember critics are more forgiving these days. The remake was shitty and featured a creepy Willy Wonka that made you feel uncomfortable he was around kids.

The King and I, with Yul Brynner was a remake. There was one, maybe two versions before. One called, Anna and the King of Siam, with a miscast Rex Harrison as the King. The 1956 version with YB was an excellent movie.

That is movie blasphemy... Opinions are like assholes, we all have one. Possibly the most truthful saying ever created.

Trying to look up some to put in here and it's making me realize that I either like some remakes but I never did see the originals or I didn't realize some of these movies were remakes.
Liked But Never Saw Originals: Oceans 11 Cape Fear Assault on Precinct 13 Evil Dead
Didn't Know Were Remakes: 12 Monkeys The Departed Insomnia
Come to think of it the only ones that I remember seeing both I liked the originals better for example Psycho and Carrie

Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Far superior to the 1971 original. I agree and if people have a problem with that they can kiss my you know what.

The "creepy" Willy Wanka makes the film far more interesting and I love the Michael Jackson comparison. I don't find him creepy I just find him sad and lonely and he finds happiness through the main kid and his family at the end.
The original lacks style and Wanka is a very dull character in it.
I don't care what critics think or like. The remake is better because it is more emotionally engaging, more visually creative and more entertaining.
I agree that BO numbers has nothing to due with quality and is a bad argument though. I also think imdb rating and RT score is a bad argument too though. The remake has 200 more critic reviews than the original, so it isn't a fair comparison.

Cape Fear is better than the original imo but I agree that Evil Dead and Assault on Precinct 13 are vastly inferior to the originals. I actually think the fact that Nolte's character is morally questionable gives the movie a much needed edge. and with the exception of Mitchum the acting is far better in the remake. I also think the concept works better in a more campy style.

The remake has 200 more critic reviews than the original, so it isn't a fair comparison Gene Wilder's performance is nuanced and his Wonka manages to be scary, poignant, hilarious and brilliant sometimes all at once. Depp just acts like a pedophile. You're right. The Depp version having a lot more reviews means the film is actually rated much higher than it should be. The fact you find Wilder's Wonka dull and the original lacking in style invalidates your already (nothing personal) ridiculous "argument".

In the internet age, any millennial with a laptop can call herself a "critic" and millennials tend to worship any remake or reboot or regurgitation spewed out during their lifetime. Conversely they hate films made before they were spawned. Out of curiosity, would you happen to be a millennial? The other kid that agrees with you is obviously a millennial. Not that you're all bad but...........
What it comes down to is, I like a Wonka that is testing kids to find an eventual heir and family to keep making his wonderful candy. You like the Wonka that lures children into his factory, murders most and their parents and then tries to trap his "favorite" with him alone and make sure the child never see's his family again. Click on the Cracked article that another poster provided above. It's spot on and funny at times if a bit too long.
Good day Sir.

Fair enough. I think the Cape Fear remake is better up until the final act. De Niro is too over the top at the end and the whole "speaking in tongues" bit is so silly it derails what could have been an excellent remake. I may have been wrong by saying the original for Cape Fear was VASTLY superior.
Wait a second. Are you moviekid from the old board?

No I am not moviekid.
In regards to the original Wonka I wasn't making an argument I was stating why I prefer the remake. I wasn't saying my opinion or preference was right or wrong. I see what Wilder and the film is going for but it just falls flat for me. My taste is more towards the theatrical and OTT than the nuanced and subtle. People often say there is no difference between best and favorite, well if that is the case than the remake is the better movie as far as I'm concerned. Besides, any time someone makes a post asking for people to name remakes that are better than the originals what they are really asking is which remakes do you like more than the originals. I see no one has responded to anyone who has said they prefer the highly mediocre Texas Chainsaw remake to the original and there is a far beigger gap in quality between those movie than there is between the two Wonka movies. Texas Chainsaw 2003 replaces visceral insanity with excessive style where everything is bigger, lauder and more graphic. Bad move. I understand why the MTV generation prefers it though.
I don't think either Wonka movies are anything special but I do slightly prefer the remake because it is more to my taste in style.
The Evil Dead remake is garbage and is a movie that thinks by making the movie an analogy for drug addiction that somehow makes it intelligent. Also, removing Ash is like taking Indiana Jones out of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Even if I saw the movie that way it would still work for me. The movie is essentially about an emotionally distant and very disturbed man child that just wants someone to connect to but is going about it the wrong way. He "kills" the parents because of his own hatred of adults because of how he was treated by his own father. All he wanted was to be loved.

Now, it has been a while since I have seen the remake and I have only seen it once but the darkness of it is what I liked.
I think the fact the Wonka movies are family films that most of us saw when we were kids is why people react to what is perceived as slights toward a cherished memory. Also the original TCM is universally considered one of the top5 best horror movies ever so people that prefer the superfluous remake are ignored as wackos.
