No I am not moviekid.
In regards to the original Wonka I wasn't making an argument I was stating why I prefer the remake. I wasn't saying my opinion or preference was right or wrong. I see what Wilder and the film is going for but it just falls flat for me. My taste is more towards the theatrical and OTT than the nuanced and subtle. People often say there is no difference between best and favorite, well if that is the case than the remake is the better movie as far as I'm concerned. Besides, any time someone makes a post asking for people to name remakes that are better than the originals what they are really asking is which remakes do you like more than the originals. I see no one has responded to anyone who has said they prefer the highly mediocre Texas Chainsaw remake to the original and there is a far beigger gap in quality between those movie than there is between the two Wonka movies. Texas Chainsaw 2003 replaces visceral insanity with excessive style where everything is bigger, lauder and more graphic. Bad move. I understand why the MTV generation prefers it though.
I don't think either Wonka movies are anything special but I do slightly prefer the remake because it is more to my taste in style.
The Evil Dead remake is garbage and is a movie that thinks by making the movie an analogy for drug addiction that somehow makes it intelligent. Also, removing Ash is like taking Indiana Jones out of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
You like the Wonka that lures children into his factory, murders most and their parents and then tries to trap his "favorite" with him alone and make sure the child never see's his family again. Click on the Cracked article that another poster provided above. It's spot on and funny at times if a bit too long.
Even if I saw the movie that way it would still work for me. The movie is essentially about an emotionally distant and very disturbed man child that just wants someone to connect to but is going about it the wrong way. He "kills" the parents because of his own hatred of adults because of how he was treated by his own father. All he wanted was to be loved.
Now, it has been a while since I have seen the remake and I have only seen it once but the darkness of it is what I liked.
I think the fact the Wonka movies are family films that most of us saw when we were kids is why people react to what is perceived as slights toward a cherished memory. Also the original TCM is universally considered one of the top5 best horror movies ever so people that prefer the superfluous remake are ignored as wackos. I don't agree with anyone who prefers the remake of TCM but I certainly don't think they are wackos and I accept their opinions. I never liked the original Willy Wonka that much even when I was a kid so I'm sure that has something to do with it.
Actually talking about it now it makes me realize how similar Wonka in the remake it is to Burton's portrayal of the Penguin. Burton deals with characters who want to make other people suffer the way they have suffered and that is why I connect with the movie. As far as I remember the people he gets rid of in the remake are the shallow and the rich. I'm not saying that is okay behavior but I do understand it.

I should possibly have exempted movies which rely so heavily on special effects, right? With the advances in CGI, it's pretty much a given that creature features are going to become more credible, plus the fact that story and acting are not the main selling points of those flicks.

The Thing (1982) was better than The Thing from Another World (1951). True Lies was a remake of an average quality French flick.

Evil Dead (2013). I don't get the love for the original, tried to watch it more than ten times already.

There are only four, and they are: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) The Thing (1982) The Fly (1986) The Blob (1988) That is all
Don't give up the fight for truly independent cinema!

The Haunting.
(Not a joke. I hate the original film. I hate the book, too. I like the remake.)

I prefer the 2006 Wicker Man over the original.
Also the 1999 Haunting over the 1963 version.

Evil Dead (2013). I don't get the love for the original, tried to watch it more than ten times already. I hate the Evil Dead remake and I'll tell you why. Much of the reason the original is fun is because of it's cheap B-movie quality (something most horror remakes miss the point of), the effortless charisma of Bruce Campbell (Like Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford, Evil Dead isn't Evil Dead if it doesn't have Bruce Campbell), the creativity of Raimi's directing and the fact that the movie doesn't take itself too seriously.
It's all in the execution and the remake couldn't have done it any more wrong imo, not to mention the absolute pointlessness of making it in the first place. It's a very bland movie that fails to be creepy, funny or entertaining.

Fair enough. I think the Cape Fear remake is better up until the final act. De Niro is too over the top at the end and the whole "speaking in tongues" bit is so silly it derails what could have been an excellent remake. I may have been wrong by saying the original for Cape Fear was VASTLY superior.
Wait a second. Are you moviekid from the old board?
