He started out as a successful country/folk singer, but IMHO, he was one of the best character actors in movie history.
Nobody, but NOBODY, could play Big Daddy Pollitt as well as he did, not even Laurence Olivier in the TV version of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. I remember seeing promos for the latter asking viewers not to compare the two actors, but I found that impossible.
Ives also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in THE BIG COUNTRY.
Later in his life, he moved on to series TV, becoming one of the cast members on THE BOLD ONES in the '70's.
I'm glad TCM runs COAHTR regularly, so we could see his amazing performance.

With Bobby Driscoll in Disney's So Dear to My Heart 1948 Fooling around during the making of East of Eden 1955 with James Dean. Where Burl played the Sam the Sheriff. With Alec Guinness in Our Man in Havana 1959 As Phineas T. Barnum in Rocket to the Moon aka Blast-Off 1967 So yes, he did play a lot of roles sometimes rather unpleasant one as in Desire Under the Elms 1958 and The Day of the Outlaw 1959. With his other career as a baladeer, he was more like a favorite uncle who comes around with his guitar and sings songs.

And was also in Disney's So Dear to my Heart (where he sings Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly) and Videocraft aka Rankin/Bass's original 1964 Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

It was on the British Antiques Roadsow the host said an old painting reminded her of an old Burl Ives song about ugly bugs, so I offcourse had to look it up. It's from Summer Magic 1963.

"Have a holly, jolly Christmas." It's the best time of the year. I don't know if there'll be snow, But have a cup of cheer." Cute--and so lifelike.

"Have a holly, jolly Christmas." It's the best time of the year. I don't know if there'll be snow, But have a cup of cheer." Cute--and so lifelike. It's one of the thing that's an eye opener when you get into classic film as an adult. Burl Ives was Sam the Snowman and the country singer my Grandmother liked. Fred MacMurray was Steve Douglas, the dad on the weak TV show My Three Sons. Barbara Stanwyck was Victoria Barkley, the cranky old lady on the run of the mill western, The Big Valley. It's was off to see Ives in the Big Country or Fred and Barbara in Double Indemnity, for example. "Hey, they could ACT!"

Yeah, it's sad when so many great actors devolved into crummy TV series. I would add Ernest Borgnine and Shirley Booth.
