Let's say someone had a very special time machine. This machine allows you to travel to the past, but when you return to the present, nothing you did in the past will have actually happened. So no need to fear about messing up time.....and if you die in the past, you wake up unharmed in the present day. Also, even if you spend years in the past, it will only have been a few minutes when you return to the present.
Personally, I'd like to travel to 1954 New York City. I dunno, just seems like a nice place to visit.
Another possibility would be being a 18th century British soldier....the uniforms and weapons were cool.
So, with this time machine, when and where would you spend your vacation?

I'd definitely have to go to Constantinople before the Fourth Crusade. Not sure the exact time period, but either during the reign of Justinian (circa 6th century) or maybe sometime in the 11th century when it near the ultimate height of its glory. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to see this.
Another option would be just permanently residing in late 19th century or early 20th century Ohio or Michigan. As long as I had a decent sum of money to not have to do hard labor in a steel factory.
I agree that 1950's NYC would have been very nice to live in.

Hawaii before the Polynesians showed up. Imagine having the entire paradisiacal archipelago to yourself! Pristine beaches, plenty of food, no one trying to kill you.
Or better yet, hiking from Yucatan to Baja California and then north to British Columbia, again before the arrival of man. Imagine having the whole continent to yourself!

What would be very interesting is if you were hiking from the south at the first arrival of man to North America. Imagine the confused looks among these original settlers/wanderers to see a strangely dressed fellow journeying from the opposite direction! I like your ideas though, particularly Hawaii, although it would have been awesome to see both South and North America before man touched it. Dangerous though... the other mammal inhabitants (particularly those with sharp teeth) might like the looks of you...

My initial thought was to depart from South America, but then I would have to cross either the Amazonian jungle or the Andes, both of which seem a bit too daunting!

Well, seeing as I'm a white (Canadian) male... I'd probably not go somewhere they'd want to kill me. I'd also want potable water that I didn't have to hunt for. Oceania I suppose... early 20th century? I dunno. That's still where I'd go if I won a lottery today (I'd want to go for semi-extended stay- I don't want my flight bill to be more expensive than my hotel bill).

It is difficult because there are so many periods I would like to visit. if I could only choose one though it would be the building of Stonehenge. I would like to be able to settle arguments once and for all about how it was built and what it was for, and how the people who built it lived.
