A top notch Guillermo del Toro flick. Nice romance/sci fi with expected del Toro visual appeasements. Seriously that dude makes good to look at movies regularly and this is another one. The characters are all fleshed out well...but simply and very subtle in a good way. At one point the main characters friend Giles has had about 2 minutes of screen time and you understand so much about him just with a few conversations with other characters. It felt like the movie trusted us to pay attention without needing details beat over our heads and that was refreshing. Ill also add they did a great job with Elisa, the lead character, who is a mute but it wasn't until about 3/4 into the movie i realized i hadnt heard her voice. They had subtitles sometimes but in all honesty you hardly needed them. Sally Hawkins did a wonderful job conveying her emotions here. I will say the third act kind of loses a bit of steam. There's just a bit of a stretch where the pace slows down again after building up and doesn't add a whole lot to the story. So you're just kind of waiting for that final climax to just get there already. Still tho...if you're a fan of Del Toro films this one should be a pleasure. Also, if you're a fan of 40's/50's musicals and whatnot, they use a lot of inspiration and imagery from those movies. I could tell if i were a bigger fan of that era and genre id have eaten a lot of scenes up. I still put Pans Labyrinth as del Toros best flick but this one is definitely worth the watch.

Hawkins and the music are excellent. The movie as a whole is okay, like a 6/10.

del Toro has yet to disappoint, I think he has a real shot at winning Best Director at the Oscars next month.

I saw it last night. It was a straightforward fairy tale/magical realism film in the vein of Beauty and the Beast or King Kong. The performances from the cast were top-notch. Sally Hawkins gave a beautiful and sympathetic performance. Michael Shannon was frightening as Strickland. The visual effects team that created the Amphibian Man did a really good job. The themes of oppression and fear of "the other" due to Cold War hysteria was obvious, but the film doesn't beat you over the head with it.

Hawkins and the music are excellent. The movie as a whole is okay, like a 6/10. And you probably think "Twin Peaks: The Return" is a perfect 10. Your opinion means jack squat

*spoilers* I don't understand why that Russian doctor all of a sudden would just betray the girl by saying "they're cleaners".. was just a lazy way to get Strickland to find the creature, just seemed rushed at the end *spoilers*

That seemed slightly to betray the character heβd become...but then again he had a horrible gut shot. So maybe he was in a f-ck it attitude.
