I found this archive of a 25 year-old mini-series staring young Laura Linney. However, the opening music sounded very familiar, but I am unable to identify it. I don't remember watching this mini-series. If one opens the link, there is a fuzzy picture of Laura and Parker Posey. Click on "01 Tales a", the first entry. The music starts about six seconds into the show and lasts for about 20 seconds. It's the type of music that might play as one is drifting off to a flashback scene or to a supernatural scene. Tales of the City, (1994)SOLVED: (Posted several hours after original post) Yes,it's Vertigo. It's a variation of the same tune: some of the audio is played by different instrument(s) and portions of it are in a different octave. Not only is the music the same, but the first few seconds of the video are also copied: Start with a closeup of the left side of a woman's face; then move to a closeup of her lips, then move to a closeup of her eyes. It's a different woman, but the same opening. And both stories take place in San Francisco. Also, IMDB does say that Tales of the City does reference Vertigo in some way, although IMDB does not explain the reference. Thanks, jervistetch. I've been trying to figure this out for about 10 days.

It sounds like the theme song to Hitchcock's VERTIGO. If it's not the exact song I think it was definitely the effect they were going for.

Sounds like something out of Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980)
