I've just rewatched the ST TOS episode "The Enemy Within"...
It's a great episode...
However, There are some things about the plot, which don't make sense.
I've tried watching it again and again, to see if I missed some key dialog, and I just can't find any... (Have I missed it?)
So, I think there are some Major Contradictory Plot Holes which don't correspond to the rest of the episodes in the TV Series?
Let's Review...
The episodes starts with a landing party/away team, having already beamed down to the the surface of a planet...
When a crewman is injured, he beams up to the ship. His clothing is covered with an unusual yellow ore, which then causes the Transporter to malfunction...
Captain Kirk... and then later, an alien dog... are beamed up to the ship. But the transporter splits them into two beings... One Good & One Evil.
The crew realizes that they can not beam up the rest of the landing party, or they will be spit into two beings as well...
However, the Landing Party is in danger of freezing to death, because the temperature of the planet drops to extremely cold temperatures at night... As so the rush is on to find a solution to the problem...
Another side effect of the transporter malfunction, also affects technology too...
"thermal heaters" were beamed down, but they were duplicated, and they would not operate.
OK, Now come some questions concerning the "Plot Holes"...
1A.) Where were the Shuttlecraft during this episode, and...
1B.) Why couldn't they send the Shuttlecraft down to pick up the landing party?
2A.) This alien dog (It is from this planet, right?)... Why didn't it freeze to death every night?
2B.) Couldn't the landing party find a similar "Dog House" to use to keep from freezing?... or at least, find a cave?
3.) OK, so mechanical devices won't work if they are beamed down...
3A.) Why can't they beam down tents, blankets, and winter clothing? Who cares if it duplicates. (Wouldn't that actually be a good thing?)
3B.) Sulu requests a pot of "Hot Coffee"... Why can't they beam down food? Again, who cares if one pot of "Hot Coffee" becomes two? (Might be a cool way to solve world hunger... LOL!)
4.) Even if the shuttlecraft can not operate in the planet's atmosphere, and the transporters can't beam down useful blankets, and "safe to eat" hot food... This is the 23rd century...
Doesn't the Enterprise have a way to send down some kind of a probe, loaded with tents, blankets, and winter clothing? So what if it crashes. At least the landing party can salvage the tents, blankets, and winter clothing, and survive until the transporter can be fixed!
It is just me, nit picking here... or am I right, in realizing that this is a rather poorly written episode where continuity, cannon, (And Reality) is concerned?
