Nicholson, Damon, Walhberg, DiCaprio, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin. Hell of a lineup. Movie was good but it not great. Kind of fell flat really. Why?
There was no meta game. No message. The Godfather had the whole thing with Michael Corleone's transformation from civilian into the next Don. That was legendary. What did Departed have? A nice Nicholson quote about bad guys and cops being the same.

An entertaining film although it's familiar territory for Scorsese. It would be like if Coppola made another mafia film.

A problem I had with the movie is the whole thing about Nicholson's character being an informant not being well explained.

A problem I had with the movie is the whole thing about Nicholson's character being an informant not being well explained. Didn't need to be explained. He joined up with the government to get paid and commit crimes with a nice safety net. Once you understand the super rich are nothing more than criminal bosses with gov't backing, this part makes sense.

It's still good enough to be within my Top 190 movies out of the 2,150+ total movies I have seen.
but I will say that it's dropped off some for me vs what it used to be as it was top notch for me at one point and it's not as good for me lately even though it's still enjoyable enough to be called a favorite.

The biggest? That it was remake which lifted complete scenes from the original but it is somehow the movie that finally earns MS an Academy Award. The fact I had already seen Infernal Affairs 1 and 2 years earlier kind of took the shine off of The Departed although I still enjoyed it. It's amazing how much MS lifted though. I wonder if it pissed him off that he finally got the Oscar and it wasn't original at all?

I thought it was a pretty poorly acted movie. I thought Mark Wahlberg was quite bad, Martin Sheen seemed to be phoning it in, I know Matt Damon is capable of more, And Jack Nicholson was just plain ridiculous. I can't believe it was so highly praised and actually won awards.

I agree with the post regarding Infernal Affairs I & II. IMO, those films are superior to The Departed...

Vanilla. Even my initial viewing, while having fun with it, it felt safe for Scorsese. That's probably the remake dna bleeding through.
I still like it, it would make my top 500 I guess.

Wahlborg.
The cgi rat.
Also the comic books from the 70s were anachronistic.

It was pretty boring and lacked any tension. One of Scorsese's worst films.

I remember back when it was released, it was considered one of the best movie ever made. When did the hate started?
