in a while--that is, a film that is getting a lot of praise from folks, and that's in a genre that I normally like, but where I thought it was more or less horrible.
Really bad acting from most involved, especially the kids--my primary reaction was to laugh at most of the "act like a zombie" attempts. It had a fairly annoying overall structure. And there was just scene after scene of relative stupidity and pointlessness, with a lot of completely arbitrary-seeming stuff re character actions and the "rules" of the film's fictional world. It also had an overall aesthetic vibe that was very ugly and kind of cheap-feeling to me--I'm talking just about the way the film, the production design, etc. looked, as well as the formal "feeling" of the film on the most abstract level. It reminded me a bit of 28 Days Later in that (and in some other respects), which was another film in this category--something widely praised, where it is in a genre I normally like, but I wound up hating it.
Probably most folks who'd respond will be those who liked it instead, and that's fine. But it's good to have different opinions, too.

Agreed, it didn't live up to the hype at all.
