I believe a LOT of people didn't find-out to WELL-OVER twenty years after-the-fact. You're close to 30 (almost 29).

I was watching Entertainment Tonight regularly during that time so if they reported it I missed it.
If I was a real geek I would be taking out the Starlog back issues and check but it could be months of issues to check if they didn't report it immediately. I am sure if I heard he died at the time I would have remembered it. Then again since he was killed by "Klingon bastards" (more literally than we want to think about) could just be that his lack of fame made one merge the two realities. But it seems to me that I didnt learn about it until well into the internet age and most likely from curiosity-checking out his IMDB entry. Yep, that's probably it.

I looked up historical events for that week and there isn't much of celebrity note during the 2 days before and after...I wonder if he got a mention during the Academy Awards obituary? I likely was watching...

I likely was watching... I would HIGHLY DOUBT IT since BIGGER STARS (WAY BIGGER) get snubbed in the In Memoriam section.

I am guessing he simply just wasn't famous enough to get much media attention then. It's a little surprising I didn't see it mentioned that he died in Star Trek-related articles in magazines especially for ST 6, but unlike the internet, such things were not highlighted with bold face or "Likes."

He was also on a one-season sitcom called Square Pegs with Sarah Jessica Parker, so I knew him from that even before he appeared in the Star Trek movies. I guess I learned he'd died right around the time of his death, an actor dying of AIDS would have been big news, especially when you've played Captain Kirk's son.
