Watching the reruns again recently, it's remarkable how the series seemed to be a finite story from its first season. The original opening credits show a tearful, apprehensive Mary driving to Minneapolis; the early episodes depict Mary as "the girl" tentatively making her way in the professional world. The succeeding seasons show her "making it" and becoming more confident, more assertive, and more mature; the series ended with her as a modern, self-assured woman who succeeded without having to revert to her "girlishness." The show ended on the same high level as the first; it never lost its sophistication and didn't go on and on and peter out like so many other shows do. Great characters, great writing.
Knock, knock! Who's there? Anna Maria Alberghetti....
