I like when people refer to Muslims as Moozlums.

Ever notice people pronounce words that have nothing to do with religion wrong?
I imagine there isn't any word in any language that somebody somewhere doesn't mispronounce on a regular basis.
Singling out religious words says more about you than anyone else, IMO.

How else did Islam become IZLAM. Since when does an S make a Z sound?
music reason season cousin disease easy Yeah, you're right. Anybody who pronounces an "s" as a "z" does so because they're intolerant and disrespectful of religion.

I say Izlam, and in my case it's ignorance. Now that I think of it, Muslims always pronounce it with a hard 's' sound. I was pronouncing Judaism correctly.

It gives me vibes that since they don't believe the religion is true, that they don't respect it enough to pronounce it correctly.

I believe that people should be tolerant and respectful of other religions and pronounce them correctly.
I don't think that 'respect' has anything to do with it, but religions don't deserve respect in any case.

People say Islam as Izlam, when it's supposed to be an S sound.
People also say Judaism as Jew-dee-ism. It's pronounced Jew-day-ism, like with "Judaic".
Do you think this is intentional and people are meaning to disrespect these religions? Or is it just from ignorance? I think it's neither. Pronunciation varies with regional and individual accents. Someone with a southern drawl might very well pronounce it "Izlamb", while a person with a Middle Eastern accent might pronounce it "Islum". Regardless, we know what someone means when they say it, so what difference does it make? There is no one "correct" pronounciation, other than by accent. Tell people in Bawstohn to stop pronouncing the word car as cah, and they'll probably flip you off.

Do you think this is intentional and people are meaning to disrespect these religions? Or is it just from ignorance? Respect is one thing. Reverence is another. A comment you have made elsewhere in the thread seems to indicate that you favor the latter. Your question, however, gives a choice between only two possible answers. I doubt that many, if any, would take offense if I pronounced the name of their religion in a slightly different way than they do. And I don't really think that the alternate pronunciations you mentioned are necessarily incorrect. "Izlam" is simply an American pronunciation of Islam, and "Judy-ism" is so close to "Judai-ism" that you can hardly hear the difference so, I am sure that most Jews would not have a problem with it. Of course we need to treat people with respect but I see no need to revere any religion, philosophy or opinion.

It has nothing to do with disrespect, nor does it have anything to do with ignorance. It has everything to do with the nature of linguistics. I had a cousin from the South whose name was Brian. Clearly, it should be pronounced in a way that rhymes with "lion." His parents never said it that way, though. They called him "Brine." That's how they pronounce "Brian" in the deep South. Am I being disrespectful by pronouncing his name the way that Midwestern dialect dictates I should? No.

i'm impressed with anyone who can still use a pen/pencil and write three words that are spelled correctly. Agreed! And I am more upset when people say 'jew-la-ry' instead of the correct 'jew-el-ry, or use the word 'impacted' instead of knowing when and how to use the words 'affected' or 'effected'. That being said... I once knew someone who pronounced the word 'muslim' as 'MOOZ-lum'; he was a fundamentalist Christian who hated 'mooz-lums', unable to see that the Christians of the crusades and holy inquisition were just as much 'jihadists' as current day muslim jihadists, and just as brutal.

Do you think this is intentional and people are meaning to disrespect these religions? Or is it just from ignorance? Pronunciations are conventions. I do not think that people are wrong to not follow a particular convention. As if there's only one convention anyway.
