"I AM big, it's the Pictures that got small!" and "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up" are movie part of movie folk lore. The big surprice is actually Gloria Swanson, who might have been a larger-than-life character in private, showing of a great versatility in her role as Norma Desmond, and even doing a Chaplin routine. William Holden had finally found his ideal screen persona, as the cynical viewer, that could be both romantic and a few times with a glimmer in his eye.
Is this a drama or a satire, not even Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett, who wrote the script, could agree, and parted ways after this movie.

8/10. Very stylish, terrific acting and script, but for my money, not as compelling as ALL ABOUT EVE. Technically though SB is the better film. I think Wilder deserved the director Oscar. The vote should have been split. Holden was commanding and very handsome in this, Swanson was excellent, but I found her performance a bit mannered and theatrical for my tastes. Yes, I know it was part of her potty character, but it was all very obvious as well. If I were to compare, Bette Davis gave a better turn as a washed out star in Baby Jane.

Dare I say, it's almost psychedelic at times. Fascinating film.
