I like CC’s Secret too. Have we ever done a “top 10 Chan list”? And I just remembered my “top Charlie Chan movie” poll. Ah, well, tells ya somethin’ about me, huh?

Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise (1940) Fairly dull and tedious, Jimmy is annoying yet again. Saved by a nice tricky ending. Also, home of the "you found gun at home in bed?" line. 5/10

Oh, I rather like CC’s Murder Cruise, and I think Jimmy’s fine, especially for Toler. (I think Doghouse made the excellent point that, just as Luke is great for Oland, so Sen Yung is great for Toler.) I think it’s a lot of fun—rather like one of the contemporaneous Rathbone-Bruce Holmes pictures, with Atwill and all… I would have liked to see the lost CC Carries On, on which Murder Cruise was based, though.

Jimmy just infuriates me in how he inserts himself in investigations and screws up/destroys evidence. Lee didn't seem so much of an idiot with his meddling.

I will say I think their changes from the book were positive and made for a better narrative.

Very true, @nxnwrocks . By the by, of the four or five you’ve seen, was one … at Treasure Island? It’s my favorite of the lot. Yeah, the Dr Zodiac plot and costume was great. It sure was. I liked his house, too. CC At TI is one of the favorites of the entire Chan series: great beginning, on a plane; some excellent "sideshow" stuff, the seriousness of a murder victim who's also a friend of the hero; and the Zodiac shakedown racket; then the hints of the supernatural near the end. A wonderful movie with a little of something for everyone; and Cesar Romero, whatever one thinks of the character he portrays, is, as always, a charmer. The movie also feels "bigger" than most CC entries, more like an A picture than even a fancier than usually scaled B. A winner all the way.

I watched Charlie Chan in Paris because someone on here mentioned a minor actress but now I cant find the thread and not sure who they were referring to. I assume it was the girlfriend of the sketch artist, not the acrobatic dancer (that was quite a dance).

It was kind of an inside joke, as one critic I’ve quoted before first brought her up, saying that he thought her prettier than Mary Brian, the ingénue-heroine. I agreed; she is a lovely girl. Did you like the movie? Or, equally importantly, Miss Peterson?

Never seen Keye Luke so young.

I hope the Oland/Toler Chan movies are available on DVD. I just got a new player, and I'd love to see them again.

Onto the no-frills Monogram Pictures entries. Not a fan of Mantan Moreland's shtick, but I've warmed to him as time goes on and they give him space for some comedy routines besides just quivering like a nervous wreck. Benson Fong is ineffectual - actually makes me miss the other two sons. But he comes into his own in Dark Alibi, which is a crackerjack plot. I was sad to hear that Toler was very sick and near death in the last few films. I think I'm changing my vote and I prefer him to Oland now. Let's see how Winters compares.
The Jade Mask was good, too.

I like Sidney Toler better as Charlie, but the Warner Oland films are better
