I FINALLY got to see The Darkest Hour (2017) and these are my thoughts:
There is something true to the saying that everything is fair in love and war. Especially the latter and especially when you are facing a behemoth like Germany in WWII.
This movie has been unfairly criticized for praising Winston Churchill and his response to the war. But what did people expect England to do, surrender to Germany? Are people that stupid?
The movie itself is magnificent, well directed, well paced and no matter who wins the Oscars, Gary Oldman has given us the best performance of the year in this underrated masterpiece of a movie.
In times of unrest we need men like Winston Churchill and this movie is one we need right now to remind us that you cannot reason with a tiger when your head is on its mouth.

The Academy likes to give Oscars to people that gain/lose weight, dress up in heavy makeup, etc. So that will definitely help Oldman's chances of winning. That's not to say that he isn't deserving of the award. I hope he wins out of legitimacy and not due to what I said in regards to the Oscars giving awards for people gaining/losing weight, dressing up in makeup, etc.

Wait, what? People criticizing Churchill over Germany? Nazi Germany? Believe it or not... yes! Some extremist leftists despise him and think in their imaginary dreamland that a "treaty" would have been better than the allies beating the fuck out of The Axis. Also, they criticize him for giving Stalian half of Germanyafte the war, but the way I see it Germany wasn't his fucking problem.

While Oldman is an actor who deserves an Oscar, this is a mediocre performance in a terrible film. Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Day-Lewis and Daniel Kaluuya are all far better. However, Oldman will win with ease. This is one of those Oscar wins which was pre-ordained by bloggers and pundits months before anyone saw the film. Not a win which will be viewed as deserving by history, but it's his time.

I think this movie is better than others this year. I actually did like The Disaster Artist, Lady Bird and others but did not care for Get Out.

Oldman was great, but yeah, the film is TV movie-level Oscar bait.
