I do not want to muddy mikehunt123's excellent thread :What's your favourite movie of each year you've been alive?, so I am starting a separate thread here.
In my inevitably long post (given my longevity) I wrote (among other things):
... what took the fun out of it was the uneven results produced. For some years, especially in the 1940s, I had to leave out some of my Top Ten Films of all time, while for other decades I was dithering over choosing between half a dozen very good, but not outstanding, movies, and the one I plumped for would not make it into my Top Tens of the best years.
I hope to be back with better choices for some years where my selections look relatively weak. Good films for sure, but hopelessly outshone by some others here.
Well, I never did get back and I am hoping you will do the job for me by suggesting improvements for my admittedly weaker selections:
1965 - The Ipcress File - Sidney J. Furie (Surely I can do better?)
1969 - Z - Costa-Gavras (Surely I can do better?)
1978 - The Tree of Wooden Clogs (L'Albero Degli Zoccoli) - Ermanno Olmi (Surely I can do better, although Mike Leigh might not think so. It is allegedly his favorite film.)
1984 - Blood Simple - Joel Coen, Ethan Coen (Surely I can do better?)
1985 - Kiss of the Spider Woman - Hector Babenco (Surely I can do better?)
1994 - Burnt by the Sun (Утомлённые солнцем) - Nikita Mikhalkov (Surely I can do better?)
1995 - Sense and Sensibility - Ang Lee (Surely I can do better?)
All good, and some very good, movies, but the best in the world for that year?

I participated in that thread and I feel your pain about having to make tough choices. Here is what I had for those years.
1965. The Sound of Music / Robert Wise
1969. The Wild Bunch / Sam Peckinpaugh
1978. Gates Of Heaven / Errol Morris
1984. Ghost Busters / Ivan Reitman
1985. Back To The Future / Robert Zemeckis
1994. Exotica / Atom Egoyan
1995. Nixon / Oliver Stone
As you put it so well, “Surely I can do better.” But, if it just has to come down to one title, you have to (as one politician described an election) hold your nose and vote.
BTW, all of your choices are good ones.

My highest rated for those years - 1965 The Spy Who Came in from the Cold - The Ipcress File is =4thYes, an equally good contender. I chose Ipcress for personal reasons, and because it was so original in its day. Michael Caine's Cockney impertinent working-class shtick was fresh and commanding in those days. Pity he kept on recycling it. The Spy who came in the from the Cold was the first in a series of "downbeat" spy stories culminating in the 2011 version of Tinker Tailor (etc), the best of the lot. 1969 The Wild Bunch / Midnight CowboyTwo good films but I am not big on cowboys, rural or urban. The blood bath at the end of The Wild Bunch was excessive to the point of laughable. I will stick with Z, although its propaganda is very heavy-handed and your two choices are better cinematically. 1978 NewsfrontHave not seen it and doubt if I will get the chance to do so. Sounds right up my street, though. 1984 Once Upon a Time in America - Blood Simple is 2ndThe ending of the Leone film partly spoiled it for me. Blood Simple's low budget sometimes shows through, but it was influential in launching a trend for neo-noirs, and if we cannot renew the originals they are the next best thing. 1985 To Live and Die in L.A. - but not a strong yearDid not like it first time round, but appreciated it a lot more on a recent re-viewing. Yes, a weak year. 1994 Quiz Show Excellent movie, but in the last resort my feeling about rubbish on TV is "if you lie down with dogs, etc." 1995 HeatSorry, never have understood the admiration for this one. For starters, Al Pacino is a big hurdle for me to overcome with any movie. Thanks for your input, OldAussie.

I participated in that thread and I feel your pain about having to make tough choices. Here is what I had for those years. Thanks for feeling my pain. Not enough people do that in any aspect of my life. 1965. The Sound of Music / Robert WiseYou realize I am a straight male, right? 1969. The Wild Bunch / Sam PeckinpaughAre you and Old Aussie ganging up on me? 1978. Gates Of Heaven / Errol MorrisI have never seen it. The Thin Blue Line is great, though. 1984. Ghost Busters / Ivan ReitmanSorry. I have no sense of humor (other than black humor).1985. Back To The Future / Robert ZemeckisI have never seen it all through, though I have probably seen all of it in excerpts three times over. 1994. Exotica / Atom Egoyan
I have never seen it. I was disappointed with his alleged masterpiece The Sweet Hereafter but will give Exotica a try. Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds a bit David Lynchish? 1995. Nixon / Oliver StoneI have never seen it. .............................. You must be disgusted with me, Mike! Thanks for your input.

Underground (1995) Emir Kusturica I was hoping you would chip in, manfromplanetX, and you have come up with two winners. By which I mean films that I would have rated the best had they come to mind when I was making my list. 1985 Idi i smotri Come and See (1985) Elem Klimov A hard film to watch, but just shades it over the spider woman. 1995 Underground (1995) Emir Kusturica One of those rare movies which is not really like any other movie (another example would be Night of the Hunter). Unless it is like another Kusturica film, as I have seen no others by him. I have not seen any of the other ten films you recommend, even though I am a big fan of Aki Kaurismäki.
