And yet Craig is maybe the closest to the Bond of the books.... You think so? I’d say Dalton, or early (pre- Goldfinger) Connery. EDIT: Either way, the real point is how good the movie is, not how faithful it is to the source material (and I’m a huge Fleming fan)—and on that ground Connery is (IMO) by far the best Bond. SECOND EDIT: I’m thinking about this… Fleming’s man is cold, but not an automaton and not a killing machine. He calculates and uses reason more than anything else (he’d be a great Stoic), but he also experiences emotion and won’t shoot if he doesn’t have to. I’m reminded of how reviewer John Brennan imagined various Bonds’ reactions to For Your Eyes Only’s Lynn-Holly Johnson: “Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton would have dropped a sleeping pill in her drink and ditched her. Daniel Craig would probably put a bullet in her skull.” That latter option doesn’t bespeak Fleming’s Bond at all. THIRD EDIT (sorry, I’m a great Fleming fan): The closest Bond I’ve seen to that of the books is not from the movies but, actually, from the BBC radio version—Toby Stephens. The adaptation of Doctor No is great; I’ve got to listen to some of the others one of these days.

I agree with a great deal of this, though I didn’t particularly like Skyfall either. I wish they’d just do a Bond film—y’know, a hero who’s as cool as a cucumber, an intelligent story, gorgeous girls—and, above all, no brooding! And, if I may add, no overacting story arc either; I can’t stand those, and I’ve long argued that they stifle creativity. Case in point right here. EDIT: I should have also noted what I liked about it: that marvellous opening sequence/shot (though the helicopter scene went on a little too long), the idea (not the execution) of Waltz as Blofeld, and Ralph Fiennes’s M and Naomie Harris’s Moneypenny (yay! They brought back Moneypenny!). And there was some nice cinematography in the too-brief Monica Bellucci scenes. Léa Seydoux’s a lovely girl, but she gets nothing to do here. I can’t think of anything else I really liked. I think it would be nice to return to the more classic/traditional portrayal of the character once Craig is done with the role. He's been in some good movies, but he's really not a very good James Bond at all.
