On one hand it's a shame, but that's only from a strictly nostalgic standpoint......25, 50, 100 years from now, when MOST corporation's brick and mortar operations are long gone, and only selling their goods online, there will be fewer and fewer people on this planet that actually remember the fun of going to a 'record shop', or even a store like Best Buy (back when they still had a (relatively) formidable cd department), and the immediacy of being able to search through the 'racks', finding and learning about many acts that you probably never would have learned about, or come across, by shopping online. Sadly, this news is not a very big deal......to anyone who's actually been inside a Best Buy store any time recently, what's left of their cd "department" is NO loss at all, as it has already been whittled down to carrying just a copy or two of the bigger artist's most recent titles, and not much else. They had long ago ceased to be an outlet offering any real 'depth' in musical variety, becoming what Target has pretty much been all along, with their 'lowest common denominator' approach to cd sales. What bothers me more, is the fact that their dvd/blu-ray 'department' is quickly going down the same path, as fewer and fewer people opt to purchase their movie/tv entertainment on physical discs. In fact, I read this article pretty much expecting that they were also announcing the end of the movie department, along with that of the music....though I'm sure that 'news' too, will be coming some day soon.... People are buying CDs online Yes indeed. I've been buying a new CD from Amazon.com, on average, every 17 days. I just ordered a new one Friday and was notified that it shipped today. Best Buy has simply come to the realization that they can not compete with Amazon's selection.

As long as CDS don't completely go away.
I don't mind buying CDs from amazon. The only time I usually get a cd from target or Best buy is when they have bonus songs. I don't drive due to my disability. So sometimes, it's easier to get the cd from amazon
Walmart.com started selling explicit cds online. I hope this gets them to start carrying explicit cds at the stores
I HATE MP3. it is compressed quality. I listen to most of my music digitally anyways.... but it's FLAC or WAV lossless format ripped form purchased CDs.
I will not buy digital albums unless it's an independent artist I really like that has no physical distribution. Then i'll tolerate it for the sake of supporting them.
I Love vinyl as well. I will willingly buy an album twice to have it on vinyl and cd. Include the CD with the vinyl and charge an extra $5 for it. Hell, 3 of my vinyls did that already did that. That was awesome. I wish all of my vinyl purchases would also have the cd with

Apple lossless is good though lol. Yeah it is. but apple lossless is pretty much Apple's version of FLAC. I no longer have apple devices so I don't use Apple lossless. I did when I had an Iphone and iPad but i went back to android

It may take like 20 years, but it happens. I've had a few official ones go bad on me too. Most will last a very long time, but some lose sound quality after years of play.

My Room-mate has the same copy of Mtume's "theater of the mind" on CD he's had since 1986. I just listened to it 3 days ago since it's still in mint condition with no scratches and since i only own a vinyl copy, I wanted to rip it to my computer. Still sounds great to me. and CD-R's and DVD-R's scratch easier than factory pressed copies

I don't mean to say that will happen with every cd. The official cd's, are fine for the most part. I'm just saying I"ve had it happen to me before. With about maybe 6 or 7 out of 3,000 cd's I have. I have tons of burned cd's and I've heard people say a 10- 20 year life span on those. But either way, once I found out that this stuff can happen, that was my motivation to go full blown digital and convert my whole collection to applelossless files.

Well I'm just paranoid about scratching from over play, which is why I rip every thing to FLAC. Plus 80% of of the day for me is spent on my computer, so it's easier to listen to the FLAC file for a song than it is to keep changing cds like my friend changes her 2 year old's diapers ALSO, One time a portable CD player spun Christina Aguilera's Debut Album too fast to the point it scratched, and when I replaced it, they swapped the album version of one of her songs with the video version since the video made the song a hit Plus i got a lot of Exclusives from best buy, target, Walmart, ETC with extra tracks, not to mention Japan And UK prints with bonus tracks.

Yeah I hear ya. Everybody has their own habits of listening and what works for them. Believe me I'm always the last to jump on the technological bandwagon. I stuck with cassette tapes till the year 2000. But I do see so much advantage in digital files over physical copies. Especially now that I have a huge cabinet filled with CD's that is just taking up too much space.

But isn't it going in that direction now? Digital files were once sold with the 128 bitrate which is pretty pathetic, and now they're going better quality. iTunes is like 256 last time I bought. I know it's not lossless, but I"m just saying we'll keep getting better and better quality.

People these days seem to prefer convenience over quality Plus when you know the song from start to finish, it's very easy to forget about the lower quality when you're too wrapped up singing along I used to not be able to tell the difference. But i was listening to stuff i knew. I actually purposely listened to music I can't stand in both mp3 and lossless when I discovered mp3 wasn't direct cd quality. Then I noticed the difference in quality also, iTunes started selling 256 kbps bit rate files in 2009 after they decided to stop selling .m4p protected files its been 9 years. I doubt that digital sales are going lossless anytime soon

I hope CDs don't go away as well. For me there's just something about having the physical copy with all the artwork, lyrics, liner notes, etc... I always liked popping in my favorite albums for road trips. Hell, the new car I got a couple years ago didn't even come with a CD player. Just a USB port for a flash drive.

People are buying CDs online I have something to add to my previous comments about Best Buy being unable to compete with Amazon.com when it comes to selling CDs. My latest album purchase is Taberah's "Sinner's Lament" (see my 2017 albums thread for details) and they didn't even bother to put their logo on the front cover (see below). I can't imagine that any band expecting people to handle their CD in a physical store would make that decision. I discovered the album on Youtube, and purchased it from Amazon.com, and in both cases the artist information was clearly listed. It's pretty obvious they were expecting people to buy the album online.

People are buying CDs online Pretty much. Half the time, the title I want, The stores don't have it. So I have no choice but to order it online PLUS, You Know Japan always gets bonus tracks. Sometimes, I want those.
