I watched the show for a few seasons, but it seemed that the show ran out of steam a while ago.

I liked how it ended.
But it should probably have ended 5-6 seasons ago.

Bones should've definitely ended 4 or 5 years ago.
Nonetheless, I quite liked season 12 and I'd say that it's a great example of how to end a show: i.e. decide at the start of the season it's the final season and then get back a bunch of old characters and wrap up any loose ends.
