For me, Tarantino. It's always interesting to hear him talk shop, but I don't like most of his films.

Offhand… Tod Browning Fritz Lang Otto Preminger ( Laura excepted) John Huston Victor Fleming For better or worse, I don’t many modern directors or their work very interesting. And, mortsahlfan, I’m wondering why you think Welles fits in this category.

Otto Preminger ( Laura excepted) You didn't like Anatomy of a Murder or Advise & Consent?

movielover I don’t hate Anatomy of a Murder or Advise and Consent, but I’m not especially a fan of them either. I do hold that Laura is Preminger’s only lasting masterpiece; on the whole, his work just leaves me cold (which may be part of the point, as Sarris argued, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it).

Orson Welles Sam Peckinpah Otto Preminger Ed Wood (though, of course, his movies are interesting, too! I like some of his movies (Otto, and Ingo)... I don't know much about him other than the fact he wasn't afraid that Trumbo wrote "Exodus" Any interviews in particular to search? Etc?

I find Scorcese much more interesting in interviews than as a director. I think he steals the scene from DeNiro in Taxi Driver!
Welles--yeah, I cant say I am crazy about his films but what a personality.
Huston--I like several of his films-(Maltese Falcon-Sierra Madre, Moby Dick, Kremlin Letter) -and I don't think I have heard him speak in an interview--as an actor he was a strong presence though. Someone said he actually didnt do much directing on set--he just used professional actors and they did what was required.

Merian C Cooper: In addition to co-directing King Kong (1933), Cooper was a WW1 pilot, Soviet POW (he escaped), founder of Pan Am, and colonel during WW2 in which he helped organize the Doolittle Raid.

...though I love most of his films, Werner Herzog is an enigmatic man.
Another quirky one is Jim Jarmusch...

Huston--Someone said he actually didnt do much directing on set--he just used professional actors and they did what was required. Yes, for Huston a great performance comes from simply casting the right actor. On The African Queen he gave Katharine Hepburn only one piece of direction, when he felt that her "Rose" was a little too severe. He told her to think of Rose as a great lady, like Eleanor Roosevelt. That clicked with her, and Hepburn said it was the single best direction she ever got. With his stars in The Man Who Would Be King Huston again had just one direction, for Michael Caine: "You can talk faster; Peachy's an honest man." Huston was always confident that if the casting is right, he could trust that the actors won't need him.

"Buffalo '66" is one of the greatest movies (although his second movie totally sucked).. I only saw him on Stern and another show, and he's definitely an interesting guy, but there doesn't seem to be much on him. I'll check again - there are always new uploads on YouTube, etc.
