I admire the hard physical work they're required to do, such as falling off heights and crashing vehicles. That applies to both men and women.
Many times they end up injured, and some have even been killed doing dangerous stunts. But even without that, I imagine the career of a stunt double is relatively short.
Some of them, though, have gone on to real acting roles.
What I can't understand is why some actors insist on performing their own stunts, especially if they're not in tip-top shape. Clark Gable just might have lived longer if he had allowed allowed a stunt professional to do that roping scene in THE MISFITS.

In the Warner Brothers war film ACTION IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC, ship's captain Raymond Massey and executive officer Humphrey Bogart have to abandon ship. The stunt doubles stepped in to perform the dangerous dive into the cruel sea. Standing off-camera, Bogie said to Massey: "I'll bet you fifty dollars that my stunt man will be braver than your stunt man."

Bogie claimed his stunt man was much braver -- but the issue still remains in doubt. Cast and crew ruled it to be a tie.

Two of the industry's best known, Harvey Parry and Carey Loftin, had careers spanning roughly 60 years.
Another stuntman story: on location for It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Loftin was hoisting a few in the hotel bar one evening when director Stanley Kramer came in. Gravely, Kramer asked him, "Have you seen the call sheet for tomorrow morning?"
Loftin hadn't, and asked, "Why? What do I have to do?"
Kramer answered, "Let me put it this way: if I had to do what you're going to in the morning, I'd be in bed right now, resting up to be in tip-top shape, instead of in here drinking."
Loftin immediately did as Kramer suggested, retiring to his room, and still not bothering to consult the call sheet. When he got to the set in the morning, the big job for which Kramer had scheduled him was doubling Jimmy Durante's foot kicking the bucket.
"After that," Loftin said as he told the story," I always made sure to check the call sheet."

Indeed. Hats off to Vic Armstrong, the guy that worked on the original Indiana Jones.

Jock Mahoney (1919 - 1989), stuntman and stunt double, who eventually came to star in TV Westerns like The Range Rider 1951-1953 and Yancy Derringer 1958-1959, and graduated to play Tarzan in two movies:

Polly Burson 1919 - 2006, stunt woman and stunt double to stars like Joan Fontaine, Betty Hutton, Yvonne De Carlo, Anne Baxter, Lucille Ball, Majorie Main, Barbara Stanwyck, Betty Grable, Shelley Wonters, Dorothy Malone, Sophia Loren and many others. I thought it was only fair to show that there was some tough and daring women out there too. As many of the early stunt men and women, Polly had learned the trade as a trick rider at rodeos.
