Just curious what national/regional chains (restaurants, donut shops, gas stations, etc.) offer good coffee, and what national chains offer bad coffee, in your opinion. Personally, I HATE the stuff, but still find it fascinating.....due mostly, to the incredibly WONDERFUL smell of freshly ground coffee beans (and the paradox of how something that smells SO good, can taste SO bad !!). Anyone ?? SAVE FERRIS

At home, I use whole bean and I've found that there is not much difference from brand to brand if you're using whole bean.
Obviously, the best-tasting coffees are found at smaller coffee shops and fine-dining establishments, but if we're talking purely commercial comparisons, I've always thought Starbucks was not very good and that Dunkin Donuts was pretty decent.

I like Dunkin’ Donuts’ coffee… McDonald’s isn’t that bad either… Starbucks is bloody awful. I like their scones and teas, but their coffee—dear God, I can’t stand it. I agree with deembastille about that burnt taste—ugh. Awful. Yuck.

Don't know, but I'd love to find one that has some richness to it that's half the price of Starbucks (Verona, Sumatra or Pike, not French/Italian dark or Veranda light).

I'm not very picky about coffee. I'm even fine with instant, which I drink often enough when I'm traveling--it's handy in a hotel room (well, given that I travel with a small electric kettle to heat water).
I also drink an iced coffee every day. Usually Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks--just plain coffee, a shot or two of espresso, almond or soy milk, and ice.

Yes, you can call me a coffee fiend; but lately I have not been happy with any of the roasts served. I drink my coffee black. I loathe American beans the most, too acidic.

I never got into the stuff, but people really love it and take it seriously.

...many people do not realize that the darker the roast, the less caffeine.
If you don't believe this, ask your local barista...

I'm with the OP, I love the smell of coffee, but I have NEVER drank any coffee that I thought actually tasted good.

Varies a lot, so it's very inconsistent. Also depends on the density of the beans and whether measured by scoops (volume) or by grams/ounces (mass/weight). www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/coffee-roast-caffeine_us_576c8725e4b017b379f57ff8
