Every generation of video games had a popular genre. For instance 2D platforming games came out in 80's, then fighting games became popular, and then 3D platforming games, 3D RPG, 3D racing and survival horror, then after the new millennium open world games like GTA became very popular, and then last generation was First Person Shooters especially online. So what does this generation of video games bring to the table as far as innovation and evolution? Virtual reality?

Maybe, it really is hard to tell at this moment,
So far only horror games or 10 minute tech demoes seem to be filling VR, but that is only going to have so much mass appeal
Like 3D it might just be a nice, always there just in the background, although in the future who knows.

Virtual Reality is always gonna be a gimmick and nothing more.
Probably it's gonna be a very successful gimmick.

I would really hope so. I never cared for the motion controlls because I found it limited gameplay.
It should be the complete opposite for VR though. It has a lot of potential as it gives a whole new perspective.
Perhaps one day they could even add a speaker into it so you could use your voice with the game as well.
I'm worried it won't get pushed as much as it should. Really every single FPS game should be VR at the very least.
If in 20 years from now playing games was something like The Matrix then how cool would that be? It's one thing to play these stunning looking games whilst staring at your TV screen from several meters away and another to actually feel like you're really in it.

VR is never gonna be the primary source for gaming. Never.

I certainly hope not. VR is just not for me and no matter how popular it gets I don't see it as anything more than a gimmicky fad.

VR has potential, but there's a lot of improvement that needs to be done.

It's too costly for be a thing for just video games. I think Sony is trying to tie in movies with their VR experience.
I honestly think VR will go the way of motion control.

Who knows, maybe technology is finally reaching that point where VR will be here to stay.
but at the same time I don't see standard video games going away anytime soon on the PC/Consoles with the usual mouse+keyboard/standard controller on a console.
