Krypton Season 1: Kneel Before the House of Zod www.bleedingcool.com/2018/02/05/krypton-season-1-kneel-house-zod/What are your thoughts on 'Krypton' so far? I know some people (well a lot of fans) aren't too happy about us getting two Superman prequel shows over shows about other superheroes but I am going to give both of them a chance and I think 'Krypton' might turn out to be the best 'cause it will be more original and we will get to see characters on Krypton instead of earth.

I have mixed feelings about this; the early days of Smallville were good, but ultimately it failed to ever evolve from its original premise to only ever be one massive tease for something meant to be far more epic, that we would never be allowed to see. It's one of the main problems I had when Gotham started, and I tried giving that show a chance, but couldn't keep watching. There's a novel about the last days of Krypton, and how Jor-El and Lara got together, and all that stuff; and there's a lot of highs and lows for quality of the story. I can't even remember a lot of the particulars, other than I debated quitting reading it half way through, because it go to be so dull; and yet there is some potential to that story, even if we know the eventual ending.
All of that said, the trailers I've seen make me feel like they're trying to harder to give an dark, edgy, congested visual, which is often a poor substitute for an actually captivating story. And for what little we've seen so far, it also reminds me, perhaps not coincidentally, of the SyFy series Caprica. What I think will determine if or how this series manages to set itself apart from those past examples, is whether or not it sets the stakes for events happening more immediately in the story; and crafts arcs that reach a quicker and more definitive climax, than it just be about some far flung ending that at best won't happen until the entire series is done, if not long after that. In my opinion it would not be worth watching otherwise, because then they just intend to tread water for however many seasons they can milk out of the novelty of seeing characters with remote connections to people the audience is familiar with; with not real intended payoff or direction.

I guess I really have to finally go ahead and watch Smallville first. But that seems kind of overkill with 2 series coming out. I also don't like when series try to be so dark. All that doom and gloomy stuff turns me off. But I'd like to give a lot of these series a chance. I had to stop watching Supergirl, but I'm sure there's a lot of series that I would enjoy that I have not watched yet.

'Smallville' was a great show Jay-hn1111 and if you like superhero TV shows and movies you should definitely check it out. It goes for 10 seasons so there are a LOT of episodes to watch but it is worth it and it features a number of Superman's most well known villains (including many that have never been in movies before) such as Braniac, Bizarro, Darksied, Deadshot, Doomsday, Lex Luthor, Metallio, Maxima, Parasite, Zodd etc along with appearances from other superheroes like Supergirl, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna, Black Canary, Hawkman, Stargirl, Doctor Fate, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Booster Gold, Aquaman, Cyborg, Mera and Blue Beetle among others. I would say 'Smallville' and 'Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman' are my two favourite superhero TV shows of all time and they were both a lot better than the shows in the 'Arrowverse.'

Yeah it's one of those shows I've been meaning to watch for years Deb. I just never got around to it. Lately I have been getting more into that kinda stuff. Though growing up I was addicted to it. I have been watching all the Marvel movies and I would like to watch the Marvel tv series also. Then after that I planned on getting all the DCEU stuff and I would probably start with Smallville and then watch the DCEU movies and tv series. But I may have to rethink that because that could take many many years before I get up to Smallville. Like I always say, too many great shows and not enough hours in the day. But you definitely make a compelling argument for watching Smallville sooner than later. I have not thought about Lois and Clark but maybe I should look into that as well. Thanks for your input Deb

Thanks for your input Deb Yes. It will probably take you quite a while 'cause there are a LOT of movies and TV shows to watch and I watched 'Smallville' when it first aired here in Australia on Channel 9 (and then Channel 10) and I had to wait until Seasons 8 and 9 came out on DVD on Amazon 'cause they stopped airing it here for two years and only got it back in the last season. I also watched 'Lois and Clark' when it first aired here on Channel 7 among other shows and then I have re-watched them on DVD. 'Lois and Clark' was a great 'Superman' TV show and even though DC wouldn't let the writers use a lot of Superman's characters and villains and they had to use a Lord Noir instead of a General Zodd they did a great job with what they had and it was one of the highest rated TV shows of the 90s beating a lot of the shows that people now call the greatest TV shows of all time. Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher will always be the best Clark Kent and Lois Lane to me and John Shea was great as Lex Luthor. I haven't watched all the Marvel TV shows 'cause I don't have Netflix but I have seen all the DC TV shows and I would rank those two as the best. Have you seen the old 'Batman' TV show with Adam West?

I do have Netflix but I think a few of those Marvel things are hulu? I hate that because then I'd have to subscribe to all these different streaming services. Life was easier with just buying dvd's in a way. I have watched the Batman tv show. The Zod season was an epic one and my favourite out of the show's run. However, Doomsday and Darkseid were terrible villains. Sometimes the cgi and costumes could have been much better but it was a thoroughly entertaining show that didn't take itself too seriously.

I'm fairly certain all of the Marvel shows, besides Agents of SHIELD, are on Netflix. There's also Agent Carter which is obviously ABC too, also a mini web series with Yoyo. The Gifted-fox network. Legion-fox cable. Runaways-hulu. Up and coming 'Cloak & Dagger' which will air on Freeform, which is either a subsidiary of ABC or alongside it, as a part of the parent walt disney company.

I meant Marvel owned, and part of their broader continuity.
I wanted to like Caprica, and watched all of the episodes, or tried to at least; I don't remember missing any episodes. And it wasn't bad, but I did think it was too much of a slow-burn series; and there wasn't enough happening to maintain a lot of people's interest. I definitely have appreciation for shows that try dig a little deeper and flesh a story out, especially after recently rewatching some older shows, like the early days of Stargate SG1, where they just cut right to the chase, and sometimes it felt like too massive of a leap, in order to get to the heart of the plot. But sometimes now it feels like shows have gone too far to the opposite extreme, and drag a story development out longer than it needs to; which, in my opinion, has often been the case on these Arrowverse shows, and would be my main point of contention with Caprica. And I also felt that became something of a larger issue with Smallville as it went on, because they held on to the idea of Clark not becoming Superman well past the point of natural development, just so they could have it at very end; and, for me at least, it ended up being very unsatisfactory.

Youre right, it was a slow burn but i thought it made up for it when things became much more interesting. Moreover, yes that slow-burn probably did lead to the non-renewal of the show

Oh that's so cool Deb. let me know what you think about it. For me it'll probably take years before I get to it but I'm going to do my best to maybe kick it up a notch and try to watch more episodes of everything else so I can catch up with everything. I am always so far behind everything to the point where I have a list of shows I want to watch going back to the 90's. but I learned my lesson. Once you fall behind, you never catch up and then things start to become outdated 20 years later! LOL but like I said before, I love the Marvel movies so I think I will enjoy all the series. I know there's a big war with the fans between marvel and DC but I think I will love both either way so that doesn't really matter to me. I am very much looking forward to the Shield series.

Yes. That show probably didn't hold up well over time like the others. 'Smallville' got a lot of viewers during the first 7 seasons and one of the top 10 highest rated shows of the week when it aired on Channel 10 but it doesn't get as much credit as it deserves especially from some Olicity fans that write it off as a High School show and think 'Arrow' would have still been made without it 'cause of Felicity which I doubt since it was 'Smallville' that made the Green Arrow a bigger name and 'Arrow' was originally meant to be a spinoff of 'Smallville' with Justin Hartley reprising the role but the writers decided to start afresh so they didn't have to bring back all the same actors and connect it onto a decade of 'Smallville.' I think if you are not a big fan of 'Arrow' but love superhero movies and TV shows you will like 'Smallville' 'cause a lot of my friends liked that show but aren't that interested in the superhero TV shows on now. I heard Kevin Feige even praised 'Smallville' and said it was one of the main things that kept the superhero genre alive and there wouldn't have been an MCU without it. One of the best things 'Smallville' did was get their characters and while there were some disappointments unlike the current shows that often use superheroes and villains that have very little in common with the original versions apart from the name like their versions of Supergirl, Anarky and Prometheus 'Smallville' got them right most of the time and their version of Supergirl was more like the comic book version of Kara Zor-El than the current show.
I still watch a lot of shows on DVD and we have Foxtel which is pay TV and most of the latest shows air on that. We don't have any streaming services but with the way things are going we probably will eventually. Although with our internet speed it is unlikely to pick up in Australia until the next decade or so 'cause one of the main reasons we still have some of the highest sales for DVDs and Blu Rays and a lot of people haven't moved to downloading movies and TV shows is 'cause of our slow internet speed. I have seen 'Tango and Cash' and that was a good movie (and I was surprised they never made a sequel for it) and Teri Hatcher has been in a few movies and TV shows over the years including the Bond movie, 'Tomorrow Never Dies' with Pierce Bronson. Her career seemed to stale for a while after that but then she got the role of Susan on 'Desperate Housewives' which was very popular here. I never saw the 'Shazam' show and I am not sure if it aired here and if it did it was before I was born but I have seen a LOT of superhero shows over the years and watched the old animated TV shows of 'Superman', 'Batman', 'Spider-Man', 'X Men', 'Captain Planet', 'The Mask', 'Spawn' and 'Fantastic Four.'

Sometimes the cgi and costumes could have been much better but it was a thoroughly entertaining show that didn't take itself too seriously. Yeah. Their versions of Doomsday and Darkseid were very disappointing but I think a lot of that had to do with their budget which the showrunners talked about on the bonus features of the Season 8 DVD and had they had a higher budget they most likely would have had Doomsday (in his monster form) and Darkseid appear a lot more than they did. I actually think what we did get to see of Doomsday in his monster form looked heaps better than the Doomsday in 'Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice' and I would have liked to have seen a proper fight scene between him and Clark in the final episode of Season 8. Sadly what we got was a 30 second face off and with Darkseid we didn't even see him and Clark fight and Clark just put on the Superman costume and flew into the sky. Season 9 will always be my favourite season and I think a lot of fans who stopped watching it after Lex left should give it a chance.

I never saw the 'Shazam' show and I am not sure if it aired here and if it did it was before I was born but I have seen a LOT of superhero shows over the years and watched the old animated TV shows of 'Superman', 'Batman', 'Spider-Man', 'X Men', 'Captain Planet', 'The Mask', 'Spawn' and 'Fantastic Four.' I didn't know about any of that about Green Arrow. That's one of those characters I was never too familiar with. Though I did watch those crossover episodes when I watched super girl. Maybe I will watch that show eventually. I consider you an expert with all things related to superheros so I will refer to you with all my superhero questions . I'm still getting used to all this streaming stuff, but I just hope it doesn't become a mess with all these different ones and original series. I"m not sure that I'll watch any of the animated stuff because there's just so many over the years but I'm sure there's a lot of good ones. But I think Shazam I heard they were making a movie of that or something but I'm not sure about that. By the way I was a big fan of Desperate Housewives at the time. That was a great show.

Don't write off all of the animation; I know there's a lot, but I would strongly recommend checking out as much of the Bruce Timm DCAU (DC Animated Universe) as you can. Starting with Batman the Animated Series, running through The New Batman Adventures, Superman The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. All shared continuity, and some truly great stories and depictions of these characters. The character of Harley Quinn originated in Batman TAS; and for me and a lot of people, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill (yeah, that Mark Hamill) created the most iconic takes on Batman and Joker respectively.
In fact, here are some highlights I sent my step-brother after having a similar conversation recently:
