Any fans of the first "Van Halen" album by Van Halen? Hard to believe it's been 40 years. Still a terrific album, Van Halen's best album, and maybe of the greatest rock debut albums. Not only are the singles classics and still played on radio to this day, but the album tracks are also solid.

This album introduced me to rock and roll.

First I heard of them was as the opening band for Black Sabbath. Most of the people going to the concert never heard much of Van Halen. Everyone knew about them afterwards. They blew Black Sabbath off the stage (not an easy feat, but Mr Osborne was slightly impaired).

Grew up near Arcadia, where Eddie would drive around town like royalty. I always prefered 'Jump' to their earlier shit:

Stunning album. Every time I hear any track from it it reignites my passion and appreciation for guitar playing. All these years later and people still can't replicate Eddie's "Brown Sound," and it still sounds as fresh and powerful as it did back then (people might be shocked at just how obsessive some guitarists are about that album's guitar tone; there's a lot of lore about Eddie's setup and gear). It's also not much of an exaggeration to say that VH were THE band responsible for 80s rock. Grew up near Arcadia, where Eddie would drive around town like royalty. I always prefered 'Jump' to their earlier shit: That was my dad's favorite song to drum to. I prefer the more guitar-heavy stuff, but there's no denying how insanely catchy Jump is.

I own a lot of the Van Halen discography on vinyl, but their debut album was the only one I rebought on CD. Every song from that album is a classic, and it remains influential today. Wulfhook's album "The Impaler" (2015) included a cover of "Atomic Punk": wulfhook.bandcamp.com/track/atomic-punk

Also, I've never been a big "tone chaser" when it comes to guitar; get me close enough and I'm fine. But I'll be damn if I don't cream myself at the thought of being able to reproduce this exactly:

I remember after that album started becoming popular, bar bands were playing covers of Eruption/You Really Got Me. Unfortunately, nowadays that's the only song I ever hear on the radio because the corporate masters only let them play the approved songs. My girlfriend at the time was a stripper and one of the songs she danced to onstage was 'Little Dreamer'.

Groundbreaking, consistent, and full of talent. Although, I can't say it's aged too well.
