i don't miss having to waiting a time limit before i could post again each time I forgot about that, it was SO annoying, I'd have a response all ready and couldn't send it.

well now you got me interested. what was happening there? I firmly believe that the years of abuse being thrown around and drama that was allowed to happen, is the demise with the imdb messaging. to be honest, it really is better here. we have admins who are actually present here and [so far] no one has been posting my personal information. i do enjoy it here although still a bit upset about my question regarding the masturbation habits of women (strictly related to the masturbation scenes in the Shape of Water as indicated in the post) was reported and taken down. I guess I would always pick no censorship with the risk what that it brings ugliness, ws too much censorship even when well meant. But that may be just me.

One thing i don't miss about the old IMDB boards is going on a soap opera board, is that there was an annoying guy on there who'd make endless threads about actresses "bumbs" or "hooters", but not discuss anything about what happened in the episode. Went by the name of "Premmie" (and other names" and he'd have multiple convos with himself. The boards weren't moderated, which was why he was allowed to do it for so long. I agree! we had some sickos on the dance moms board who wanted to screw the girls. he was disgusting. did you ever get a dickpick in your pm box? and I also agree that the boards were just not moderated. I got the feeling there was no actual person or people dealing with the discipline on the site. they also allowed many accounts to be made using the same person and ip address [you know when you signed up you had to put an official name on the account although your poster name may be different] and that was just asking for trouble. I had made a suggestion of making an allowances for like 5 accounts under one ip address 'just in case something happened to one account' but I was being bullied by one douchebag who had no less than 15 accounts that most were not socks. they would close his current account down and he would create a new one within 10 minutes. that needed to stop. closing the boards were the best way to stop this abuse. Not even the verification system worked. You had to give your phone number to IMDB, to authenticate your account. I thought that this'd be a way to deter trolls and people who make sock accounts. sadly not.

well now you got me interested. what was happening there? a long withstanding never ending drama revolving around a poster who 'won a physics award in high school' [as claims to how much of a genius she was, to her reasoning why she was enrolled at the age of 26 in a 'college' class made for mentally retarded people to teach them how to ride a bus and take out library books. we would never have known any of these things if she didn't willingly tell us. there is so much more but it got nasty. and basically what happens to a bully's crony when the crony would realize exactly what they were doing and try to stop, the bully and the other cronies turned on that crony! I firmly believe that the years of abuse being thrown around and drama that was allowed to happen, is the demise with the imdb messaging. to be honest, it really is better here. we have admins who are actually present here and [so far] no one has been posting my personal information. I completely agree with your last paragraph. It was insane how nasty and hateful some of the boards (The View, in particular) became and when I would contact the admins. about the worst offenders all I got was the standard "we thank you for contacting us but we're too busy doing absolutely nothing to help" response. I miss posters from the old board that I lost contact with, but it's much more pleasant here.

Has it?! Jesus, where's my life going?
I think the closing of the IMDb boards is something of a metaphor for how we think and act as a people. You can’t give anybody any freedom anymore, cause they simply abuse it. I miss having a larger and more active place to talk about movies and TV, but that place had become a cesspool.

Wow... Even now, just occasionally, when on IMDb I will instinctively click on my name as if to select the message boards link. Old habits... I miss them. I still keep feeling like I can just go to a film's message board to check out discussions about it, or like I can go to an actor's message board to see what they're up to now. I really miss those aspects. Me as well. The boards weren't perfect, but I do miss them.

People cannot be trusted with the power to say and do anything they want. They need limits. interesting opener. got a few questions/points. 1) why would you call it "irrational"? Are you indicating that throughout history (lets stay in modern times to make it easier) there has not been censorship that you yourself would deem as "bad" (clearly harmful for the society impacted by it)? Thus fearing it is irrational/makes no sense (since it doesn't exist/never existed)? 2) I would take out the "doing" (anything they want) from this debate. I was talking about censorship of speech, "doing" is a too open term that could include things like murder etc, so it doesnt seem right to include it in this. 3) I agree society needs limits. However limits can be (and successfully are in most countries) installed by the law without including censorship. The freedom to say anything you want is a precious human right. And it does not mean you do not have to fear/be aware of consequences that you might find harmful to yourself. Example: In Europe in most countries you cannot openly say nice things about Hitler and nacis. Its a crime if you do. Compare with the USA. Where you legally CAN say it, but it still doesn't mean you are somehow sheltered from other ways of the society showing unhappiness with your words (be it twitter backlash, or getting fired, or being judged by your peers etc). There are limits. The society has multiple ways how to "control" human spoken/written word without using censorship. 4) My biggest problem with censorship (next to it being a gateway to totalitarian regimes and dangerous power mongering) is that censorship changes reality. It takes away our opportunity to see what humanity really is. Including its ugliness. Why shelter ourselves preventively from it? People not being able to handle other peoples ugliness is the reason why IMDB forums were closed! 5) If anything we should focus on improving education and mental health of people, so in the future the society becomes mature enough that its participants will opt for better ways to behave. But in the meantime we have other ways how to regulate human behaviour, without censorship really needed. Free speech forever!

There are literally dozens if not hundreds of examples of countries that implement censorship and are not totalitarian regimes; and haven't been for hundreds of years. The Netherlands, Denmark, and Canada all have laws against hate speech and are all considered pretty great places to live. many countries limit what types of language or explosive material are used in TV and movies. There's different levels. You can't curse or show nudity on basic cable, but you can on movie channels, DVDs, Blu-ray, and theaters. It has no bearing on the freedom of the citizens who live in those countries. IMDb were shut down and guess what we all lived to talk about it. It had no bearing on our safety or freedom. The slippery slope argument has very little merit.

Also, saying "look, there are countries where there have been some limits to what people can/cannot say and they are not totalitarian regimes" doesn't really mean that there cant be others where censorship is a stepping stone and eventually a critical part of the government being able to sustain its dictatorship. but no, when I mentioned overdone censorship I didnt mean countries that prohibit hate speech. As I said in my original post - I personally would pick no censorship even if it leads to exposure to human ugliness over too much censorship even it that is meant well. But I respect that you may have a different opinion and would pick the other way around, thats fine. Was just trying to understand why you saw what I said as irrational.

I agree with all the sentiments posted here that miss the old boards especially the individual movie and TV series sites. Every time I saw a movie I could go the board and have a discussion or read an interesting old discussion. For TV shows, every time a new episode aired there would be new discussions about it, no matter how obscure the show was. This site is great but it doesn't have anywhere near the amount of information/discussion that the old boards have. moviechat, themoviedb, and *** are all extremely dead with little to no discussion. Usually, it's not even worth logging into those sites because no one is talking and if you post something no one answers most of the time. MovieChat is by far the most active, it's a very good alternative when it comes to individual movie boards.

It is hard to believe it was a year ago. There are some aspects of the old IMDB I miss like the separate sections for movies and TV shows and the amount of members we used to have writing on the TV show boards. Some boards like the ones for 'Arrow', 'The Flash', 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', 'Supergirl', 'Supernatural', 'Dark Matter', 'Scorpion', 'Once Upon A Time' and 'DC's Legends of Tomorrow' were getting 2 or 3 posts a minute when they were active but I don't miss the homophobes especially the ones on the 'Supergirl' and 'Frozen' boards, the racists, the sexists, the slut shamers and most of all, the cyber bullies who went out of their way to destroy boards. This board has been a lot better thanks to the Admin and I enjoy being able to use my own emoticons and pictures which was something I always used when I was a moderator on a music channel's forum (before it was ruined by some crazy guy who was obsessed with the size of his penis and had to post pictures of it everywhere ) but couldn't do on the IMDB boards and I also like being able to post videos. A lot of the members are friendlier on here too and I have enjoyed meeting and talking to a lot of you.

omg that reminds me... if you caught that little tidbit I was talking about re: the demise of te OIMDB boards... [full house] the poster imp articular would often also be on the frozen board -- yeah the 26 year old -- with the HS physics award... and would whine about her sister in law not wanting her around her niece because... her niece [who was a baby] cried during frozen [26 year old was watching it] and 26 year old yelled at her! fck you! yeah, and cartoons are people, too.

I use both sites, the general discussion board as well as film/TV boards have a post every other minute, IMDB2 can go several minutes without a new post on any board. Being in a different timezone, it's obvious to me as during the day this site doesn't have so much activity as MovieChat.

If it wasn't clear enough, let me rephrase: it is perfectly acceptable to me that our opinions and preferences in this matter differ. In the beginning I was trying to understand why you say what you said (therefore I was asking you that question) but since you decided not to answer it my interest in trying to understand you greatly diminished, thus I am no longer interested in discussing this topic on this platform (and further hijacking the thread). I hope thats ok with you.
