... Do you think if it makes less, but respectable opening weekend like 130 mil people will call it under performing?
Studios tend to put out a lower number for their estimates, then say Entertainment Writers. Any word yet what Marvel expects?

Like a softer version of what Justice League experienced? It's possible. But with the hype and positive reviews, fanboy backlash happening sooner than usual not withstanding, I'd be surprised.

Not exactly the softer version. Justice League, while I wouldn't scoff at 95 million, I wouldn't call it's opening weekend respectable. Say it gets 125-135 instead of 145-155. I don't know why but I feel it's going to do well but not as much as the hype is predicting. I want it to do well, and I don't think it will be like Icarus in any way. I suppose it's just my pessimistic nature rearing it's ugly head.

Actually, its been bumped up to $165 million expectation That's insane and it's not happening. People are batshit nuts when it comes to this movie. Guardians 2 opened with 145m. Maybe the holiday will help it, but I just saw this 170+ million from variety

You can't make this stuff up. I'm not sure it will beat Deadpool. Even if it does, it's absurd to think it's a given. While it would be cool for it to go that high, I would and maybe Marvel would take 135 million and call it a win. That's just my shitty little opinion though.

If anything it's more likely to outperform expectations.

If anything it's more likely to outperform expectations. With Variety saying 170+ million if it outperforms those expectations you start getting into Ironman 3, Beauty and the Beast, Civil War numbers.

I hope this does well. there can be more black superheroes as leads.
It reminds me of when FOX and ABC had sucess in ratings with tv shows like Scandal and Empire. Usually it was a no no to put a black character as a lead in one of the big networks but Scandal and Empire reversed the myth.
my dislike for mcu and their retarded movies does not mean I do not want African Americans not to do well. This is a black movie with an all black cast. it does matter.

I don't know what it's going to make but it will be a ton, it's going to do very well. Marc Bernardin . a writer that does the Pod Cast with Kevin Smith Fatman on Batman shared an anecdote. (Paraphrased but if you want to hear it source ) Marc is an African American. Some times he likes to go to food courts in malls for the white noise and write. He said he was walking to the food court and a random African American said "Black Panther in a month, yo". Marc feels he wasn't recognized for anything other than being black. Marc said apparently counting down the days to BP release has replaced the head nod in African American culture.

The entertainment media are just as bad as the news media when it comes wild hyperbole and the herd mentality. the predictions that matter are the ones that come from the studio. Everything else is back ground noise.
The extreme DCEU fans and Disney haters will call the movie a flop no matter how much money it makes. However, this movie is guaranteed to be a huge box office success.

I think it could go above 200m. though 100m is already a land mark moment for an african american movie.
I hope it does well in asia, reminded me of when Eddie Murphy said Coming to America was the first successful black movie in asia. BP could follow the pattern instead of puling a last jedi.
Maybe its me, but when I was in school, Asians and Africans (Africans as in people from the continent) seemed to bond more due to their similar strict background and culture. always wondered why it was not reflective in movies.
